Greeting from Windows 7. I changed from CenturyLink to Xfinity for
internet service. The modem/router that I got is a Netgear c3000. I
can log onto the internet through Windows just fine, and access the
modem router with 192.168.0.1.

Ubuntu does not recognize the new equipment at all. No internet access,
and I cannot access the modem router itself with the 192.168.0.1

I am probably missing something very simple, but I cannot figure out
what it is.

There are so many missing details that its hard to guess what the
problem is, but my guess is you have dynamic IP set up on private net
within the router.
That means your computers need to do dhcp to get the right network settings.
before you can do that, you need physical connection, I like a link
light on the computer and router, just to be sure that things are
groovy before network set up.
If you can confirm that those are happening, then we can narrow down
the problem a little

I'd guess the router is at 10.0.0.1, which is fairly common for xfinity these days.

Sure, thats also a lovely private network, but now you are making it
more confusing, not less confusing.
Is the router 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x.
it wont be both, it doesnt really matter which, either computer should
get the right network settings when they connect.
Do all the computers (windows, linux, ...) and all the routers ports
have link lights? do they have activity lights? do the activity lights
blink?

Do you have network settings (like an IP address, gateway, ...)
Are your computers setup for static, or dynamic network settings?

If your private network is 10.x.x.x, how is windows working with
192.x.x.x ? or has something changed?

Windows 7 is working fine with it.

The network icon at the top right of the desktop and I select

Wired Connection 1

Enable network is checked

Then I go to edit connections

Choose Wired connection 1

and I enter edit

This is a terrible print screen, but is this where I need to start adding or changing settings?

It looks like your router is set up to do DHCP, which means your computers should be set up to do DHCP, which is typically the default for most computers, including ubuntu.
With ubuntu usually do is make sure the hardware is working by checking link and activity lights, after cables are connected, then the default settings just work.
Typically, I have physical connection, then I install ubuntu, and during installation it automatically sets the network, and downloads files during install, then after install, it automatically connects to the internet unless I disconnect it.
Why doesnt your install do that?
Did you connect to the internet during install? maybe you have an unsupported network device? Some devices are designed to only work with windows, but most work with any OS.

If you were able to download all the updates and stuff during ubunut install, then it should also work now. If you were not able to download anything druing install, you may want to re install, and make sure its doing a full install including downloading all the current updates.

Where is it that I find these numbers?

  1. Go to the IPv4 Settings tab and change the Method to Manual.  Did This

  2. Click Add and type the IP address

  3. network mask and

  4. default gateway IP address into the corresponding columns of the Addresses list. Press Enter or Tab after typing each address.

These three addresses must be IP addresses; that is, they must be four numbers separated by periods (e.g., 123.45.6.78).

  1. Type the IP addresses of the DNS servers you want to use, separated by commas.

  2. Click Save. If you are not connected to the network, click the network icon on the menu bar and connect. Test the network settings by trying to visit a website or look at shared files on the network, for example.

It sounds like you are asking for help setting up static IPs, on a network that is setup to do automatic addressing. Personally, that sounds stupid, and im not really interested in helping do stupid things.

Maybe you can convince me that its not stupid?

Well.  I started looking at what the addresses were on Windows 7.  It sounds like they are not compatible

    Based on :
I dont know all the things that you did during your install, and all the changes youve made.
I would say that the easiest way to resolve the problem is to install ubuntu fresh, and use the default networking settings, which should automagially work during install, and continue to work after install.
If you cant download current packges when you install, it may be because your networking device is not recognized, or supported. In that case you may need to use a different networking device, or figure out how to make yours work right.
There may be a hardware compatibility list that you can research to make sure that your hardware is supported.

I hope you are willing to take another look now.  I reinstalled Ubuntu and I can access the internet in safe mode, but not by the regular boot.  I did IP config on both boots, and I have not changed any of the setting.

I have no idea why it would work only in safe mode, but I guess that is progress.

the ifconfig output looks like eth0 is set up about right, it should also do that in regular boot up too.

I copied the settings from the safe mode to regular boot for the internet settings, and it works now.  Hopefully it will stay working.

    Thanks
