Some Ubuntu problems I'd like a second opinion on.

Alright, so I'm working on this side project for my church. They are looking at replacing WinXP with a Ubuntu installation, and they want me to make sure all the hardware operates correctly. I have a test bed set up, and have gotten as far as ensuring a boot and making their web-based software accessible. However I've run into two snares.

1) Display cannot be set higher than 1024x768. Monitor does support higher res.

2) Dymo LabelWriter Twin Turbo printer media default cannot be changed. For some reason, when I try to change the default media, when I click apply, the media switches back. For example, I'm trying to set default media to 58x106mm (estimate), but it changes back to the hardware default of 22x58mm (estimate).

Pertinent info: Ubuntu 12.04 from USB flash drive. Working at a Dell Dimension 4600, P4 HT 2.8GHz, 2.5GB RAM, Built in Network performing ok, do not have full specifications on box at the moment.

Update, update, update. After a reboot or two things may work right.

Assuming you are using 12.04 LTS, you should first update, like
previously mentioned. You may want to try 13.10 instead, its just
newer, and needs less updating, but also needs to be updated right
after install.

Im not sure why your video is limited, but it may be using generic
driver, and you may need to install a proprietary driver to get better
resolution. You should check your log files for details about what is
loading in /var/log/Xorg.0.log You may also find useful info with the
output of
dmesg
(run from a console, and scroll up), or use
dmesg | more
to page through dmesg.

Check out proprietary drivers? There should be an Intel 865g as there are forum posts about it a la:

If not satisfactory, you can install from this well done article:
