Hello all:
Well, tomorrow and one more Sunday and I will be on my way back home.
I am already missing my intense lifestyle here, although to be honest it is hard to sustain for a long time.
Last night I left la Viruta at 5 am. La Viruta has been the queen of the night club style milonga. It's in a basement and the lights are red/bluish. Sitting is mixed. You sit where you can. Cabeceo happens, usually at a short distance.
La Viruta is a place known to those who have been in my Buenos Aires tango immersion tour.
It is a place where you can learn to rock, to learn tropical music and of course tango.
The 3 most popular nights in la Viruta are Friday night, Sunday night ( 11 to 4:30am)and Wednesday( labeled as a practice). There are regular classes and milonga.
At some point in the past someone got the idea of making it free of charge starting at 1am. So, many locals go to their regular milonga, maybe one that starts at 10pm and around 1am head to La Viruta. The organizer, if he is in town, will play the kind of traditional tango that keeps your energy up. He is considered one of the best DJs. His name is Horacio Godoy.
This afternoon (Saturday) I made it to an afternoon milonga at the club Gricel, called La Matineta. Pretty full, older crowd. Level of dancing varied. Definitely tradicional on sitting and accommodation. One of the dancers told me that I was in the wrong milonga “I have entered a Geriátrico!
Next Sunday: I will focus on a new trend that I find quite interesting…
Meantime, I am going to stay put this evening.
Tomorrow Sunday. It will be intense. I plan to go to Mafalda(afternoon milonga) la Chiflada (starting at 8pm to 12:30) maybe go to an outdoor milonga called Sensibleros, because Diana who used to live in Eugene is one of the organizers and DJ. Hoping that my feet can survive (the outdoors is pure cement) Payment is at La Gorra(hat) meaning you contribute with what you can, not set feed. This is one of the many outdoor ones that appeared after the pandemic. It is well attended and open to everyone.
Ok. I will be writing my last report next week, summarizing this trend and others that I observed.
Meantime, don’t forget classes and Milonguita in Eugene tomorrow. Tango continues to bring joy and new experiences to our lives.
Wonderful Rafael will continue to delight us with great traditional tangos that are the soul of the dance.
PS
I have been meeting with Maestro Joaquin Amenabar whom we will have the pleasure of having at the beginning of April in Eugene, more coming up when I am back home.
Some pictures of Buenos Aires of the things I love besides tango.
