Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well.
We are now just 18 days away from Maestro Amenabar’s arrival in Eugene. This is a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of tango musicality and explore new ways of hearing and interpreting the music of tango, milonga, and vals.
In anticipation of his visit, I would like to share a meaningful "motto for the day" from dancer, teacher from Buenos Aires Aoniken Quiroga. His words serve as a powerful reminder of the values that define our dance: (here an excerpt)
"I have danced tango all my life… I don’t remember my life before tango. When I dance, it gives me structure. This is my motivation. This is my moment... Tango must be respected, loved, known, studied and analysed. It must be understood, once and for all, that it is popular culture, and that its noblest expression is the milonga—the dance hall, the place of socialisation, union, and shared values. For that to happen, we must return to the roots: in the milonga, only the social dance counts… If you understand the value of respect and tradition, you will understand that there is nothing more beautiful than to walk with elegance on the compás."
As we prepare for the Maestro’s insights, let’s carry this spirit of respect for the tradition and the social dance with us. I look forward to seeing you all there as we celebrate the essence of tango together.
