Hi everyone,
Resending this subject as some of you miss it. We will make time to answer questions regarding this subject.
How do we flow smoothly and safely on the dance floor?
Let’s review some of the unwritten rules of tango dancing in the milonga, also known as floor craft or the "Codigo." Historically, in the 1940s, inspectors in Buenos Aires milongas would send dancers back to classes or practicas if they weren't up to code. The Cabeceo was also used and continues to be used to discourage the unprepared, our reality outside of Buenos Aires is different; we welcome everyone regardless of level to help build our community.
I ask those who have been around longer to be patient and encouraging with our newcomers. Floor craft takes time, practice, and experience to master, and tango navigation is always a work in progress for all of us.
Here are a few "one-liners" regarding floor craft.
1. Manage the gap between you and the couple in front; don’t let it get too big.
2. Respect the outer and inner lanes.
3. No chatting while dancing.
4. If you bump into someone, offer a polite smile and a brief apology—even if it wasn't your fault.
5. Maintain a counterclockwise flow.
6. Be mindful of back-stepping.
7. Maintain a proper embrace.
8. Merge onto the floor carefully, just like on a highway.
9. Be cautious with flying boleos and ganchos…
10. Ensure you have the minimum skills for caminata and turning in place.
11. Avoid trying new sequences; save those for class or practica.
12. Maintain equal distribution within the lane.
Following these guidelines helps us avoid collisions and injuries, ensuring a better experience for everyone.
And the weekly reminder
