Greetings to all;

My stay in Buenos Aires, its milongas and its people is reaching its natural ending. As many of you know I have been traveling to Buenos Aires since the year 2000. And since then I have traveled frequently to Buenos Aires. Each time, I take time to research new trends and changes.

 In 25 years I have seen lots of changes, yet the prime motor “tango” in itself remains the big actor attracting young and old of all ages to its mysterious web.

In  2000, you can hardly spot a young attendant to the milonga. In this trip, I have danced with wonderful dancers that back in 2000 were just beginning their journey. That is remarkable to see.

As I said in previous posts, economics and the pandemic propelled lots of locals to join tango. More people than ever, more milongas than ever. All of those changes affect the “Codigo” code of conduct
Some milongas are very attached to keep the Codigo alive. Others are creating their own version of its Código, maybe they cannot afford the big place, maybe they cannot afford the  teachers, so they create a slightly different version to survive.

Besides the many new milongas, some of them “night club style”, and an equal number of super traditional, outdoor ones etc. There is a new model  that is beginning to surface. They are called practica or milonga. You know about them by word of mouth.
 This new arrangement helps followers to have a chance to dance with very good dancers of all ages for a reasonable fee.

That is to say the organizer hires all these extras dancers many of them trained for the world tango championship professional and semi professional.  For two hours followers can dance non stop (yes there are cortina) equal amount of leads and followers.  The advantage is that the followers (usually in Milongas  in greater numbers than leads) don’t have to spend a night waiting to be invited to dance.

Of course, the taxi dancer model has been in place for a few years, it used to be “tabu” but again economic forces  break tabúes as well. There are two of this kind of Milonga right now once a week. I went and tried both. I would say 80% of the dancers were very, very good, 20% were ok. But not bad.

I think these new modes won’t substitute the milonga or anything like that but it is an example of how new models appear to help keep up with demands.
So, now we have Practicas of all kinds, milonga of different kinds, outdoor, lots of classes, new studios, new schools that are defining themselves according to style and preferences.
Lots of additional techniques to catch up with what is called “alterations (traditional movements that you reverse) in short lots of changes, but the essence of tango remains the same, the oneness is still celebrated and young and old feel it. You have a good dance when you feel the connection of two bodies moving as one to tango music. The music each time was impeccable. Lots of new orchestras full of passionate musicians. In one night you have lots of places playing live music.
And I can go on and on…

Arrival:
 I will be seeing everyone hopefully on Sunday the 28th to keep building our little tango world in Eugene. My arrival will be on the 24th. Fingers crossed.

NEW YEAR
Don’t forget we are going to celebrate the new year-December 31st, 2025 together from 7-10pm at the same place we have our Sundays milonguita. Low key, just a way to say goodbye to 2025.
  As in the previous two years, we will have the “After Party” to celebrate 2026  at Patty and Steve’s house. They will be welcoming anyone with their famous Potato soup. Please connect with Patty directly to let her know you plan to attend the After Party and any other details.   See below her contact information:

Hope you all have a great time tomorrow with our DJ Rafael and the fabulous team of Deanna, Sandra, Mary, Patty, Greg and of course each one of you celebrating tango every Sunday.
