I am writing to you from a small balcony of my rented apartment in Buenos Aires. It is a sunny, spring day with a very pleasant breeze. It helps that there is some green foliage of surrounding trees. I am in the neighborhood of Almagro like all the Buenos Aires neighborhoods. It is like a little town on its own: everything you can think of: Fresh meat, bakery, restaurant, fruit and veggie and on and on. I love that.
I arrived on Wednesday the 12th around noon. By 10 pm that night I was at a new milonga called Espacio Unit with my fellow DJ and his girlfriend who had told me about it. This is one of the many newer milonga.
(Uni stands for university and it is hosted by people who graduated from CETBA this is sort of like the Community College of Tango in fact it is nicknamed Tango University. You get a 3 years degree in everything tango.
Some observations of Espacio Uni milonga
The age group is mixed from late 20th to 60ish. Floor is pretty slippery. There was some wet towel by the door to use to wet the sole of your shoes. Dress code is whatever you have on. Some were a bit dressed, but the majority were not. Cabeceó is minimal because the light is pretty dim. This is like a tango nightclub ambiance.
Sitting on the table is a mix (men and women) the host still sits you. Reservation is advised. The level of dancing is advanced for the most part, although you can spot some newbies. DJ has an excellent selection.
I had a great time!!! Danced until the end of the milonga 2am.
Took Thursday off to catch up with money exchange, get to know the neighborhood etc.
Friday night l9pm to 3 am. Yira Yira at Club Gricel. Packed. Host chooses your sitting. Table of females, next to table of males. The column sometimes makes it hard to cabeceo. Primarily cabeceo, but some people can come from behind and tap you on the shoulder, which was not done in the past but now it happens.
Age group balanced toward older end. People are friendly. Danced until about 2am. Some dances more memorable than others.
Tonight heading to Cachirulo- considered the most traditional of all 9pm to 3am it is at el Beso Club. More next week.
Hope you are all well. Have fun with the tango clothing Exchange. I am enjoying myself and checking on the pulsing changes of the dance we love.
