Would anyone like to take the lead in investigating the possibility of an SQL Saturday in Eugene?  Perhaps 2019?

The Portland SQL Saturday Planning Team is having a Virtual meeting June 24th @7pm, and I would like someone from our group to attend, and potentially ask questions, but mostly to get an understanding of what it will take, and what kind of resources they tap into.  No further commitment required.  I know it's a ways out, so I'll send reminders as we get closer.

Can someone do that for me, and report back?

I haven't heard from anyone else on this.  Anyone?  Josh?  Ms Block? Dan B?

Dan,
I can't take the lead but as the organizer of SQLSaturday Orange County and a regular SQLSaturday presenter and mentor of SQLSaturday Los Angeles I could help mentor and coach you from afar.  I grew up in Eugene, am regularly in town visiting and go to SQLSaturday Portland every year.

Please reply to me directly as I don't check the Google email account that this groups is linked to.

I can help as well (not lead, am on the road too much).

It seems we need to get regular group attendance over 10 people before we put on an SQL Saturday, I don't want to put through a whole program with 2 or more tracks, and only have 10-12 people show up.  Even double the attendance for an 'event' seems paltry.  Perhaps I'm wrong.

Anything you can do to boost regular attendance would be great!

Dan,
I hear you.  However note that the Orange County and Los Angeles user groups only have 10 - 20 people attend monthly meetings and we have around 350 attend SQLSaturday Orange County and 150+ plus attended SQLSaturday Los Angeles their first and second years.  (Orange County has held 9 consecutive SQLSaturdays and were able to help promote SQLSaturday Los Angeles.
Thoughts:
  • For many people a saturday event is easier to attend than a lunch or evening user group.
  • There are more topics at a SQLSaturday than a user group meeting so there is a larger draw as more people can find a session of interest.
  • Even a few dozen people is a success
If you can obtain a cheap or no cost venue, get local speakers, it is possible to do it with few to no sponsors.  I suspect many Eugeneans go to Portland for SQLSaturday (I met a couple last year!) and bet you would get some Portlandians to go to Eugene if you did it in the summer, opposite time of year to Portland and had compelling sessions and speakers.

We can chat more here online, face to face in Portland or better yet on the SQLTrain on Sunday to Seattle to Summit after SQLSaturday Portland.

Dan/Paul/SQL Eugene,
Is anyone going to SQLSaturday Oregon in Portland next month.  I will be there and would like to talk about doing a SQLSaturday Eugene!
I am driving up from Eugene on Saturday morning arriving about noon.  I can give rides there but not back as I am continuing on to Seattle on Sunday.

Ted, nope... I'll be in Kenya that week. We can chat about SQL Saturday EUGENE mid November.
I'd be willing to be a sponsor, presenter, and co-organizer. Just presented at SQL Saturday Paris few months ago.

Eugeneans.....

Anyone going to SQLSaturday Portland on November 3rd?!!!
I would like to connect with you and meet face to face while I am there.  I will be in Eugene on Thursday and Friday, the 1st and 2nd, and could meet in the evenings if anyone want's to meet at Sam Bonds on the like and chat.  I going to spend days with my dad before driving up on Saturday morning (my session is in the afternoon).

Let's connect!

Elizabeth,
Are you still thinking of going to Portland?
Still interested in a meetup on Thursday or Friday?
How many people are active in your local user group?

Cheers,
Ted

Ted,

Yes, I'm planning on going to Portland for SQL Saturday but I may go up early to get together with some friends so I'll probably drive by myself. We have about 10 people in our user group. Thursday would work better than Friday for me. There are a lot of good breweries and restaurants we could meet at. Let me know if you had a specific place in mind.

Cheers,
Elizabeth
