Speaker: Our Elizabeth Block

Topic: DBA Cheat Sheet:

Do you have trouble remembering common administrative T-SQL commands? Remember when you created a cheat sheet in school to help you study for an exam?  Use that same principle with the DBA Cheat Sheet! The DBA Cheat Sheet is a document filled with some basic administrative TSQL commands you’ll need in your daily work. During the session I’ll show you a few SSMS tricks and review some of the topics in the DBA Cheat Sheet document.  You’ll leave the session with a document that you can use as a reference every day.

Bio: Elizabeth Block is passionate about using database technologies to solve business problems.  Currently a Senior DBA at Lane County, Oregon, she’s on a team managing over 100 app, web, and SQL Servers.  Extensive experience in database design and analysis has helped her in her roles as database consultant, developer, and DBA. She’s worked with SQL Server for over 10 years.

Topic: Dr. DMV's Troubleshooting Toolkit - Live online presentation

Dynamic Management Views and functions allow you to easily see exactly what is happening inside your SQL Server instances and databases with a high level of detail. You can discover your top wait types, most CPU intensive stored procedures, find missing indexes, and identify unused indexes, to name just a few examples. This session presents, demonstrates and explains a complete set of diagnostic DMV queries that you can easily use to detect and diagnose configuration and performance issues in your SQL Server instances and databases.  This session goes into exhaustive detail on how to interpret the results of each of the diagnostic queries, including relevant background information on how to properly configure your hardware, storage subsystem, operating system, SQL Server instance and databases in order to avoid performance and scalability issues.

Bio: Glenn is a Microsoft SQL Server MVP. He has worked as a SQL Server professional for many years in a variety of roles, including stints with NewsGator and Avalara. His expertise includes DMVs, high availability, hardware selection and configuration, and performance tuning. He is also an Adjunct Faculty member at University College – University of Denver, where has been teaching since 2000. Glenn is heavily involved in the SQL Server community, and is a frequent speaker at user groups, SQL Saturdays, SQLintersection, and the PASS Community Summit. He is the author of the book SQL Server Hardware, and he wrote chapters for SQL Server MVP Deep Dives and SQL Server MVP Deep Dives Volume 2 books.

Speaker: John Martin

Topic: 23 Tips for SQL Server Productivity

Abstract: No matter what your role, if you have been working with SQL Server for some time you likely have some tasks that are routine or repetitive in nature.  Small incremental improvements in completing these tasks can certainly add up, resulting in added time for more creative and hopefully interesting work.  In this presentation I will share some timesaving methods that have helped me be more efficient in working with and supporting SQL Server databases.

Bio: John E. Martin is Lead DBA at PeaceHealth and currently focused on SQL Server, Oracle, and Caché database administration.  He has held a variety of IT roles over twenty-some years and has worked with SQL Server since version 6.5.  John was a contributor to SQL Server 2008 R2 Unleashed (Sams Publishing) and is a member of the Eugene SQL Server User Group.

Speaker:Vern Rabe

Topic: SQL Server Statistics

When the SQL Server optimizer evaluates a query to determine how best to execute it, the statistics are quite possibly the most important tool at its disposal. But SQL Server statistics objects aren’t perfect because they only contain estimated summary information. In this session, we’ll start with an overview of what the statistics objects are, how the optimizer uses them, and some general guidelines for their maintenance. Then we’ll look at some of the issues, how to find them, and how to solve them, that can arise due to their imperfection: ascending keys (the most prevalent statistics based performance killer?), correlated predicates, skewed distribution, or downright bad summary information. There’ll be many examples, and even a stored procedure to help you find ascending keys. By applying the techniques we’ll discuss, you WILL see improved query performance.

BIO:Vern Rabe is an independent SQL Server consultant and contract trainer in Portland, OR. He has attained MCSE, MCITP (both Administration and Development), and MCT certifications, among others. Vern has been working with databases since 1992, and has worked with SQL Server since version 4.21a. He provides broad technical SQL Server skills gained from the mixture of academic and practical experiences acquired from his classroom instructing and varied consulting contracts.
