The principal of Woodstock school with the Mandarin Immersion Program (MIP) in Portland is retiring
this year. I am not sure if anyone qualified to be a principal in Oregon is on this list, but I
know that many parents in the program would like to see the new principal be a bilingual Mandarin
speaker. (This is not to say there were any problems with the current principal not being
bilingual, but just that many think this would be an interesting evolution for the MIP given that
the current principal is retiring.)
That said, there is one big roadblock. The job announcement went out long ago and seems to have
closed a couple weeks ago. The parents just found out about this and the fact that they were
looking for a principal for a MIP was only added recently, so some parents think its possible that
appropriate and interesting applicants may not have seen it. But in case someone here is qualified
and a bilingual speaker, perhaps you would be interested in investigating on the very very small
chance they would open up the application process for someone uniquely qualified. (If do
investigate, please let me know and I'll see if the parents can push somehow to get you looked at.)
Mandarin Teachers Needed Too
=========================
I also believe that Woodstock is having some difficulty finding enough native Mandarin teachers who
are also qualified to teach in Oregon. If any bilingual person certified to teach at an elementary
school in Oregon wants to move to Portland, please please contact the Portland Public School
District about applying. Sometimes years (this year included I believe) they must employ 2 teachers
for 1 classroom. One is a bilingual Mandarin speaker and one is an Oregon certified teacher. I am
sure they would love to have only 1 who is both Highly Qualified and a Mandarin speaker. There may
be openings available or coming up.
FYI, I am not a PPS employee. I'm just trying to help get the word out to qualified Mandarin
speakers. Please forward this email to anyone you know who might be interested.
Best Regards,
Mark
