Hey everyone. I just created a Facebook group to help the Eugene Go players stay connected better than this google groups page.

I was also wondering. What would would need to happen for you, as a Eugene area Go player, to make it to an in person Go meet up? Is it that the day is wrong? Did you try showing up, no one was there and you gave up? I know the club as died and revived many times over the years. Why do you think it keeps dying out? I'm interested to hear your opinions.

Guess I've been too busy lately, but I haven't been since a few consecutive weeks where I came and didn't see anyone. Go isn't nearly as popular (or well known) in the US, so we don't seem to have enough regular players to keep up the continuity or to maximize good pairings.

BTW, thanks for starting the FB group, Robert.

I don't believe lack of numbers is the problem. This group has 42 members and many of the members still live in Eugene. There are also many players that aren't a part of this group that I've seen try to drop by for a game. My feeling is that one of the problems is, quite like your experience, that players aren't meeting up constantly enough so they never show up again. Another I feel is advertising. I believe that there are many go players that live in Eugene who just don't know of a way to meet up for a game. Eugene is a college town and even had the first, to my knowledge, Go college class. I also remember a time when there were 10+ people meeting up for the Eugene go club. The club just seems to revive and die every year. Lately though even the revive attempts end up just being 1-3 people meeting up consistently for a month or two before giving up. I also get mixed signals from this forum because the majority of the posts are "who wants to meet up", 2-3 people say they do and then nothing happens. This is why I want to see what needs to be changed for players in this group to make the meetup and what they think will help find those Go players that don't know how to find someone to play.

Thanks for creating the Facebook group, Robert.  I don't have an account, so I won't personally be using it, so hopefully someone can relay information back here as necessary.  ^_^;;

One thing that comes to mind that is different from the old group is that we no longer have an actual email list.  This google group helps, a bit, but I only receive daily digests, some people only receive weekly digests, some people might not receive an email at all.  And even then, the emails are generally "filter and forget," especially given the passive nature of it.

There used to be a sort of email list, as in one person had a list email addresses and would send out a reminder every week.  I was doing this for a time, and even included the occasional hand-drawn comic.  If anyone would like to receive these "gentle reminders" to get over to Go club at a certain time, I can start sending them out again (and maybe even include a bonus email attachment to clog up some inboxes every once in awhile).
