Well, to cut to the chase here, the Cascadia Forest Defenders are =
proud to host a show by the wonderful folks from the Forest Action =
Network, a big part of the defense of the Elaho Valley and British =
Columbian forests in general, at the Grower's Market on Saturday at 7 =
pm. If you haven't been following the action, loggers have pled guilty =
over an attack on a handful of activists last year, a Mountie is facing =
four counts of assault for cutting the lines to a platform, and a 72 =
year-old great-gramma (in many ways) was sentenced to a year in jail for =
blockading a forest road. Crazy times, good show, people you'll be proud =
to meet.

FAN Action Van Update
Since the beginning of October, the FAN Action Van has been =
going
around the "Province of BC," building solidarity amongst communities
across the province so that united, we will be a powerful force in
defense of the forests, the land and sovereignty. Along the way, =
the
Action Van has worked in various communities to organize and support
actions against the Ministry of Forests, REVY Hardware, Staples,
InterFor and Dorman Logging. The Action Van has also be doing
slideshows and workshops to strengthen our resistance province wide.
The slideshow is about the temperate rainforests in "BC," the Great
Bear Rainforest, the Elaho Valley, the Slocan Valley, Native
Sovereignty, Ecoforestry and Globalization. In December the tour =
will
continue down the west coast of the US, bringing international
attention to the destruction of the ancient temperate rainforest in
"bc." For more info on the FAN Action Van tour check out our website
at http://www.fanweb.org/actionvan2000
=20
Ministry of Forest
The Ministry of Forests is the major government agency that
supports and promotes the destruction of the ancient forests of =
"BC."
They hand out tenure to huge corporations so that they can clearcut
the province, providing a few jobs and minuscule tax dollars to the
economy. The MOF is in bed with the forest industry, obeying their
every beacon call. On October 10th, FAN, Friends of the Elaho and
Friends of Clayoquot Sound descended upon the MOF HQ in Victoria
demanding that they "Cut the Cut (the Annual Allowable Cut)." check
out http://www.fanweb.org/actionvan2000/mof.html
=20
REVY
REVY hardware is one of the largest dealers of stolen ancient
rainforest wood in "Canada." With over 43 stores across the country,
REVY directly contributes to the deforestation of "BC," by buying =
and
dealing old growth Cedar, Douglas Fir and Hemlock from companies =
like
InterFor. On October 20th, FAN conducted a dead rainforest tour =
around
the REVY store in Vancouver, stickering old growth wood on REVY's
shelves with product warning stickers. For more info on REVY look at
http://www.fanweb.org/actionvan2000/revy.html
=20
InterFor
InterFor (International Forest Products) is the largest =
destroyer
of ancient temperate rainforests in "BC." They hold the majority of
tenure in the Great Bear Rainforest, including logging rights in =
over
25 pristine valleys, are logging in the Elaho Valley and Clayoquot
Sound. They are actively destroying traditional territories of many
Native peoples, including the Nuxalk, Heiltsuk, Lil'Wat and Squamish =
.
On October 27th, two FAN activists climbed into two trees in front =
of
the home of William Sauder, the chairman of the board, controlling
shareholder, and ex-CEO of InterFor, and chancellor of UBC. =
Basically,
the big bad guy in BC forestry. Grizzly and Salmon remained in the
trees all day without getting arrested, demanding that InterFor get
out of the forest. To find out more check out
http://www.kickinterfor.com
=20
Staples Business Depot
Staples is the worlds largest and fastest growing office supply
store, stocking their shelves with paper coming from endangered
forests from around the world and with Sauder Industries (a =
subsidiary
of InterFor) office furniture. On November 15th, a day of action was
declared against Staples, demanding that they start selling 100%
post-consumer recycled paper, stop selling ancient forest paper, and
stop selling Sauder. Actions were held in over 50 cities in the US.
The action van was in Moscow, Idaho that day, and with one days
notice, 5 folks came out to the Staples store there. Tree free =
paper
was provided as an alternative to the destruction inside. On =
November
25th, the action van helped out with another Staples action in
Victoria. To find out more about Staples check out
http://www.coastalrainforest.org
=20
Idaho Wilderness
In the beginning of November, the Action Van with the
Cove/Mallard Coalition visited Otter Wing and Mackay Day, two timber
sales within the largest wilderness area in the U$A outside of =
Alaska.
There has been a ten year fight to preserve Cove/Mallard timber
sales, and just this year, the sales were canceled by the Forest
Service who declared them a "mistake." During the weekend, elves
blocked the road into one of the timber sales with debris. All =
weekend
the Freddies (forest service police) stood guard nearby making sure
that corporate forest destruction would succeed. Help is needed to
stop the forest service from destroying it. Cove/Mallard Coalition =
has
plans for actions over the winter. co...@moscow.com, 208-883-9755
=20
Mt. Elphinstone, Sunshine Coast
The Action Van headed out to the Sunshine Coast to do a
slideshow, a day of workshops and help with the community resistance
to the destruction of Mt. Elphinstone, which is behind the community
of Roberts Creek. Lalo has been camping on Mt Elphinstone since =
August
protesting the destruction of this second growth rainforest, =
watershed
and the governments neglect and disrespect to native title and
sovereignty. She has renounced her Canadian citizenship and applied
for citizenship in the Sechelt and Squamish Nations. During our time
there, we helped Lalo and the community erect a tipi which Lalo =
plans
to live in for the winter. Help is needed in this struggle. Contact

Logging Truck Blockade on Salt Spring Island
On November 27th, a lone woman locked down to the axle of a
Dorman Logging truck in the middle of the town of Ganges on Salt
Spring Island. Dorman has been hired by the Texada Land Corporation =
to
log the forests of Salt Spring. As soon as the truck was stopped, =
over
a hundred communities members came out in support. A few aggressive
loggers stopped by pushing people around and kicking signs and =
stumps
around. After a whole day, over 20 RCMP with help from Dorman were
able to grind through the lock box, arresting the lock downer. =
Logging
continues on Salt Spring, despite massive community resistance to =
the
destruction of the island. check out http://www.savesaltspring.com
