Saturday, May 16 is our second big LIGHT field trip for this school
year. Jacksonville is the focus of this day trip and the whole town is a
National Historic Monument!
The newest major exhibit at the Jacksonville Museum of Southern
Oregon History is called "Miner, Baker, Furniture Maker." This exploration
of how people worked and lived in the Rogue Valley during the 19th and 20th
centuries shows how changes in technology had an impact (or not) on various
occupations. Besides the town simulation, there are numerous specialized
displays. Teens and parents might be interested in the pottery and
quuilting collections.
Right next door, the Children's Museum has completed remodeling that
allows the Hands-on History activities to be enhanced by a new train diorama
in the upstairs. The old courthouse now brings alive many home and
occupational settings from the 1850's to the 1930's, including a general
store, baker, schoolroom, jail, covered wagon, Indian lodge, a bedroom and a
kitchen area.
After a lunch break, we have information for a walking tour of
selected streets, including the Crafts and History store where the
Handweaver's Guild and a potter often demonstrate their techniques, the
original gold discovery site, the cemetary and about 12 other public and
private historic buildings along the way. (There are at least 80 possible
historic sites to choose from.)
We will finish the day in Medford at the Southern Oregon History
Center and the Jackson County Courthouse, featuring transportation history
and firefighting equipment, respectively.
Sign up at the LIGHT table at the monthly LIGHT meetings. There's
one this Saturday, 3/14/98, at Garden Way Academy, 231 N. Garden Way, 9 am.
Cost is $7.50 for adults and $6.50 for children, which includes
entrance to all museums and tours and bus transportation to Jacksonville and
back.
