Hi all!
For those of you who are really in Lane County, a neat bird-watching
opportunity should be coming up soon. Each spring and fall thousands of
migrating Vaux's Swifts pass through Eugene and spend the night in the huge
chimney in what used to be Condon Hall on the University of Oregon. I think
it is called something else now, but it is on the corner of E. 17th and
Agate, across of Hayward Field.
When the migration is at its peak (probably in a couple of weeks),
you can go at dusk and watch thousands of birds swarm the sky above the
chimney. At some secret signal, they start literally pouring into the
chimney as if into a funnel. It is an incredible sight. They cling to the
sides of the chimney for the night, and then emerge in the morning.
Vjera, my 16-year-old birder, spotted her first Vaux's Swift this
morning. (They are about the size of swallows, but they look like cigars
with wings.) So they are starting to arrive, and I'll try to post again
when the numbers are getting massive.
Also, Vjera is leading the Lane County Audobon Society bird walk
this Saturday, April 18. (Can you tell I'm a proud mom?) If you are
interested, meet at the South Eugene High School parking lot (19th &
Patterson) at 8 a.m. Kids are welcome as long as they are interested and
can stay quiet.

Wow! Wish I lived in Oregon. That sounds like an awesome site that I'm sad
to miss.
