Just Joined
Robin Burr
Hi! We just joined the list. At Jody's suggestion, here is our intro.
My name is Robin Burr, my husband is Rob and our son, who is 13 years old
(8th grade), is Roberto. We are self-employed and our office is in our
home, so we are very lucky that we can all spend so much time together.
Actually, although Roberto is the main student, we all learn from each
other everyday. This is our second year of home schooling and although it
can be frustrating occasionally, we all do enjoy it. Each of us spends time
teaching Roberto the things we excel at. Roberto is a self-motivated
learner and quite adept on his computer. He writes HTML code and actually
works for our company making web sites and training people on how to set up
Macintosh web servers (when he has completed his lessons for the day.)
Right now we are concentrating on reading the classics (Shakespeare, Jules
Verne, etc) and completing a large GED program book by Cambridge. We feel
Roberto will be ready to take his GED soon and so he can then begin to take
college classes.
Roberto has been a "reader" since he was 4 years old. In Kindergarten he
was reading 2nd grade level and higher. I think this basis helps him with
everything else. His weakness is Math, which his father is great at, so you
know who does the math lessons!
We live in a wonderful area, Coral Gables, Florida (near Miami),
unfortunately, the school Roberto had to attend was in a very bad
neighborhood in Coconut Grove. By 3rd grade his teacher told us we had to
get him out of the school, before he was influenced by the children selling
"crack." We bit the bullet and paid the price of sending him to private
school- a Montessori School. This worked out wonderfully through the 6th
grade and he received a good basis of knowledge. For 7th grade, though, we
were back to the bad choices again, or send him to a very expensive private
school that we just couldn't afford, nor did we like it (designed for those
parents who want their children to be doctors or lawyers - just not for
us).
And so, this is how we came to home school. So far, so good.
Roberto is a Boy Scout in Troop 7 (one of the oldest Troop's in the U.S.
formed in 1922) for socialization. He is very active and working towards
his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout by the time he is 16. You can check out
