Magazine by unschoolers pays tribute to its roots
Nation Magazine, a bimonthly publication about people and their lives,
is scheduled to release a special Unschooling issue this June. The
issue, written entirely by unschoolers, intends to broaden both schooler
and unschooler awareness for the magazine.
Founded in 1995, Nation was originally intended to present the lives and
writing of home educated people from across the country. Since it's
inception, the magazine has fostered a burgeoning community of
unschooler diversity in a dynamic, caring atmosphere. With 19-year-old
editor Peter Kowalke at the helm, interaction among readers and
contributors is not a recommendation, but a goal.
"There are thousands of unschoolers and homeschoolers out in the world
who are looking for genuine friends," he says. "People who are
compassionate, open to diversity and interested in the world around
them."
The upcoming Unschooler edition will feature autobiographical anecdotes
from teen homeschoolers. One of the many vibrant and inspiring essays to
be
published is by New Jersey unschooler Sarabeth Matilsky. The
detailed account of her cross-country bike trek is at the very essence
of
Nation. The issue is complemented by interviews with Grace Llewellyn,
author of "Teenage Liberation Handbook," and Clonlara founder Pat
Montgomery, Ph.D.
"Nation's Unschooling issue is a flag, a signal letting homeschoolers
know that we exist, that there is a national network out there for
people who embrace life and dare to follow their dreams," says Kowalke.
A lifelong Ohio unschooler, Kowalke graduated from Clonlara in 1997 and
writes about home schooling. He has appeared in numerous homeschooling
articles, including a feature story in the New York Times Magazine.
Nation has received critical acclaim from homeschoolers, unschoolers and
advocates alike. Mentioned regularly in the publications Growing Without
Schooling and Home Education Magazine, Nation is also listed in the
upcoming edition of "Homeschooling in Oregon: The Handbook."
