I've just been hearing that if you REALLY want to know what is happening in
America read or listen to the foreign news accounts of America. I read
yesterday that all of America's media, except the small, family owned
newspapers & radio stations, are actually owned by only 10 corporate giants.
This includes newspapers, magazines, TV & radio. The commentary wondered how
we can possibly be enjoying the fruits of a free press when the power to
determine what gets in the news is in so few hands.

I think it's more important than ever that our children learn to seek the
truth: by not settling for only one account of any given event or situation;
by being able to separate fact from opinion; by demanding hard statistics
rather than nebulous "sources said," and by being able to spot propaganda.

In spite of all you say, I still think there are as many instances of
illogical or faulty assumptions leading to claims of knowing the "right way"
among religious conservatives as among left-leaning liberals. That's why I
don't align myself with any broad-based school of thought. I see too many
flaws in both. Instead I take what I think does make sense out of all the
dogma rampant on both sides. This means I'm able to think critically about
everything instead of swallowing wholesale a "truth" just because it's
presented by my side -- be that religious, or conservative or socialist or
whatever.

But yes, I do think the pendulum did swing too much in the 60's and 70's too
much freedom, too little responsibility, etc. But that doesn't mean
everything that came from that era is horrible. Something we homeschoolers
prize -- individuality and the freedom to come make the decisions that work
best for us and our families are partly rooted in 60's thought. Similarly, I
like the idea that women worked to be better respected as equals. I just
think it's too bad that to mainsteam feminists, "equal" means women have to be
just like traditional men -- work 40 hours outside the home, etc. instead of
saying that women's role as nurturers are equally important as men's roles as
providers. Meaning that instead of men being the "head" of the household and
the boss because he's the provider, men and women can be equals even if they
hold different positions within the household. And you don't need to be
conservative or religious, or anti-religious or socialist to think these
things.
