This is a poem I wrote just after a close national election years ago.
The twilight zone we entered before dawn on Nov. 8th strongly reminded
me of it. I think it describes the kind of interregnum* we're in.

It is late at night in America -
All the minds are asleep or
they are awake -
plotting subterfuges -

The military, paramilitary
trunklines gush
malevolent informations;
Right-wing, left-paw,
all in the same
devouring maw -

We, who are of another
animal altogether,
Break the jaws ripping
open our throats -

*Interregnum - n. 1. An interval between the end of a soverign's reign
and the accession of his lawful successor. 2. Any suspension of the
usual ruling powers of a state. 3. Any break in continuity.
