Hello one and all,

I hope you are all well, enjoying summer and suchlike.
I said to Abby that I'd pass this on to the EUCS list. Sounds like some useful projects that Transition is working on. Sadly I wont be in Edinburgh next year (Erasmus) so I can't get involved with any HS activity :( but maybe we could get back to Abby with some thoughts on this stuff?

Lots of love to all,
K x

Hi folks,

Hope all is well with you this fine monsooning Edinburgh summers day! I have a few bits and pieces of exciting news to share with you but would also like to pick your brains about Hearty Squirrel goings on next year. Any information you have please pass it on, gracias.

So big exciting news no.1:

Transition Edinburgh University are holding a Harvest Festival event as part of our Transition work to promote action towards more resilient food systems! This will take place on Friday 1st October, from 1pm - 5pm, in Potterow

So, would you like to have a stall/ board space/ activity space to let people know about co-op goings on, how it's an incredible thing and how to get involved?

Here's some more shpeel about it: the purpose of the event is to raise awareness and debate within the University community about the need for a sustainable food future! The activities for the day will be a Harvest Pot Luck Lunch from 1pm; a wild food walk at 2.30pm and a talk from a local organic food producer at 3.30pm. Throughout the whole afternoon we are hoping to have relevant University & Edinburgh wide stalls/exhibits regarding local, sustainable food systems. Those invited so far include the Soil Association, Abundance Edinburgh, Changeworks Kitchen Canny and master composter projects, the Green Fork and lots of food related student societies- to give you a flavour! We will also be showing a presentation on food systems and sustainable solutions throughout the day and providing creative activities for people to record their ideas.

Not as big as yet but potentially very exciting piece of news no. 2:

Inspired by Aberdeen Uni I really want to set up a veg bag scheme at the uni. The idea being to introduce students, staff and more to fresh, local, organic veg by making it more affordable and accessible to people (ie. bringing it to them and waving it in their faces). The bag idea is an intro to a veg box scheme- get a load of veg from a local organic farmer, divide it into bags and sell for a £5 in a prominent place (potentially outside library, unions, chaplaincy, in KB etc) engage with our community about food and food choices and promote veg boxes, community projects and support local farmers!

Just a little aside I also want to do the transporting by...cargo bike (maybe one we could construct ourselves...more welding fun karen?) so that there would be an easy way to transport veg to different locations and increase peoples curiosity! But that plan might need some more thinking through...

I was therefore wondering if hearty squirrel would be interesting in supporting this scheme? I'd really love to chat it over with you and get your opinions, advice etc and catch up in general so when you get this send me a line.

Bonne. Hope to see you soon,

Abby

hola!

hope everyone is well - in response to Lucy's emails she sent around earlier in the month about picking a time and date to have a massive session of co-operativey type chat - i think it's definitely in need and now that we are nearing the beginning of year should we tease out a time that would suit people.
possibly just before freshers week so that we have our wits and knowledge about us for the influx of new enthusiastic munchers? maybe we could meet one morning for a couple of hours - do a bring and share as well to keep energy/moral high?
i reckon if there is points for the agenda too it would be good to get them out now so that we can have a focused meeting?

abby's email via karen about the harvest festival sounds intriguing and lots of positive stuff packed into it - would definitely be great to talk about it and see how we could get involved? is this something we should talk through at the meeting too?

on another note - i was thinking about how when we set up we decided to be a co-operative rather than a food co-operative to leave space for other projects. i was thinking it might be really cool and fun to set up some kind of bike skill share group. i reckon it could be an accessible and supportive way for students who are new to the city (and those who are not) to get support/knowledge about the rules of the road and how to cycle properly and safely (i know i am still figuring it out), to promote a biking culture, to learn about bike care, basic upkeep etc, integrate in some critical mass type events and whatever else people might be interested in. i know there are other bike schemes and projects offered around the city but if there was some kind of bike basics skill-share it could be quite an accessible and empowering way to get people into urban-cycling. we could go on cycle trips and have hearty-squireel/allotment picnics :p
i'm not really sure how this fits into the co-operative side of things at the moment - but i figured i would just float it out as an idea to see what people's thoughts are...

hope everyone is doing grand and looking forward to lots of co-operative/diy/food projects next year :)

dee xx

Guys, just thought I'd get the chat rolling about hearty squirrel next year. I'm guessing we're gonna want to get as many people along to a meeting as possible to chat everything out. shall we try pick a date to gather, maybe early Sept, so that we can start reminding people about in an annoying and repetitive fashion?
Hope everyone is well, if you're walking past the giant cow on bristo sq come say hi.
Lucy

bonjour!

Just to pick up on the cooperative type projects now - my friend Joel and I (who is coming up to Edinburgh next year too) are involved in trying to set up a land coop in the near future. We have the ideas and a little bit of start up money, but need as much help and advice as we can get. Perhaps it could be put on the agenda for the meeting? I made a quick doodle cause it seemed like people were talking about a meet-up but if we're not careful it might pass us by. Not sure if its right, but I guess once we know when people are free we could find a place to meet?

Hope thats cool, I'm not sure when I'll be coming up myself yet, should probably decide soon though!

Hey guys
Can I just check that I'm not the only one that got the message from Ric wanting to join up?
It didn't have [eucs] or anything else at the beginning and I Just got a pang of fear that somehow I've become the contact for the society despite not actually knowing what's going on.#
Sorry if I'm worrying about nothing!

Yo guys.
So, Bridget and Dee's coop related chat sounds really exciting, I
think it would be a good idea to have them on the agenda at our first
meeting. I also met Abby a couple of days ago to talk about the
harvest festival and it sounds very exciting. I think it would be
really cool to have a stall and to help out with the cooking. Also at
some point soonish we talked about putting on a joint event talking
about the brilliance of coops, maybe with speakers and foodyness etc...
Basically, we need to make a meeting occur. Is anyone around next
week, say daytime Tuesday? We could meet in the chaplaincy (I'm
assuming it's open) at 12 or something? That's just one idea, feel
free to bounce around more. It would be good to catch up though, and
sooner would be better, but not so soon noone has checked their
emails. Cool. Hope all are well
Lucy
p.s esmi i didn't get the Rick email but it might just be me? will you
forward it to me?

Hi guys,

Does anyone fancy going to P&P's Fairtrade picnic in the meadows this Monday? We've been invited along to give the society a shout out. If you'd like to maybe give Richard a buzz on 07751923871 beforehand. Would be great to have a presence at the society fair if we can muster enough volunteers, although I won't be able to make it to that or the meeting either.

So dudes, I've just been given a job interview thing at 10 tomorrow.
I'm gonna head to the chaplaincy after, for 1, and it would be great
if anyone interested in chatting about hearty squirrel stuff could
come join me. We can make fun plans!
Hope all are well,
Lucy

Dudes, just to let you know I've tried to simplify the ridiculous
email contact lists we have. It is simple as...mushy peas, so read.
We now have just two. One with all our members and volunteers for
emails about meetings/shop volunteering etc.
The other for current active/core members or whatever you want to call
it, basically those who are around and send emails/come to smaller
meetings at the moment. That's just for this kind of thing, to avoid
all our members getting all our random emails.
Obviously when we're emailing people to let them know their order of
chickpeas/muffins(ben)/whatever has arrived it's specific to those few
people.
Both those lists are in our email account in 'contacts', clearly
labelled as 'HS Members' and 'current active volunteers'. Anyone can
add to either if they go into our account. For those who don't know
the details:
user= info...@gmail.com
password= lovelygrub
So. From now on if we could stop just replying to this list and use
the others instead, else we can't add people. Will send this from the
new PROPER list too, so you'll probably all get it twice. I'm sure
you'll cope.
Luc
