Android slowly squeezing out Symbian as king of the mobile OS

Open-source mobile phone telecom software is a relatively new development in the world of the smart phone, having been around for just a few years. But the first major power shift is already shaping up, as a flood of Android-powered devices begins to steal market share from current leader Symbian.

Matt Asay at CNET writes that, in contrast to Google’s Android, Symbian has stayed more or less confined to Nokia as a handset manufacturer. Google has struck landmark deals with Motorola, Samsung, and HTC in recent months.

Research from tech firm Gartner indicates that Android is set to become the second-biggest mobile OS, passing Blackberry and iPhone, and that Symbian’s declining market share offers Google a shining opportunity to take over significant chunks of the smart phone market.

The launch of the Motorola Droid earlier this month has cemented Google’s place as a challenger not only to Symbian for the mobile OS market, but to Apple for the luxury smart phone market. Initial reviews of the device have been strongly positive.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19465269-ADNFCR
