Dear supporter,
We're in court today to challenge the B.C. government's climate accountability — or rather, its lack thereof. The current government, which prides itself on its green credentials, has failed to comply with its own climate change legislation.
On behalf of our client Sierra Club B.C., we're arguing that B.C.'s latest climate accountability report fell way short of the mark. In fact, it failed to answer one key question: Whether B.C.'s climate plans are on track to meet the province's emissions targets for 2025, 2040 and 2050 and the crucial target for the oil and gas sector in 2030. British Columbians need this information to know whether their government is doing enough to address climate change — and take it to task if not.
Given the scale of the climate crisis and B.C.'s history of missed targets, we won't accept a "just trust us" approach to climate action anymore. We need transparency and real accountability from our governments.
Like many of my colleagues, I was deeply moved by the outpouring of support for our recent youth climate case in Ontario. Thank you again to all those who gave so generously. Climate lawsuits like these are one of the most powerful tools we have to effect change.
From Ontario to British Columbia, we're schooling politicians on climate — and class is still very much in session.
Thank you for standing with us,
Matt Hulse,
