The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta, established in 1969, offers MSc and PhD positions for prospective graduate students interested in learning and conducting research with our vibrant team of faculty members, graduate students, and other academics in state-of-the-art research facilities.

The Department of Linguistics has long-standing research expertise in the following areas:
Bilingual, first, second and heritage language acquisition (Archer, Colston, Daskalaki, Järvikivi, Paradis, Lam, Guardado)
Language documentation and fieldwork (Arppe, Beck, Guardado, Huijsmans, Lachler, Lam, Rosés Labrada)
Psycholinguistics (Archer, Colston, Huang, Järvikivi)
Sustainability, revitalization and technologies for Indigenous languages (Arppe, Huijsmans, Lachler, Lam, Rosés Labrada)
The Department offers cutting-edge training in experimental methods including advanced statistical analysis and organizes the Spring Training in Experimental Psycholinguistics (STEP). Our students also benefit from our close ties with the Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI).
Accepted PhD students are provided four years of funding in the form of TA and RA stipends ($25,000 per year minimum).
