On page 110 of Lukacs' Class Consciousness he says, "For a class to be ripe for hegemony means that its interests and consciousness enable it to organise the whole of society in accordance with those interests.  The crucial question in every class struggle is this: which class possesses this capacity and this consciousness at the decisive moment?"  This passage identifies how class consciousness enables to differentiate between classes and consciousness. It identifies between struggles and helps to set up the argument for the rest of the passage.  Hegemony is power structure and the way of knowing.  It relates to consciousness by consciousness being the act of awareness of the surroundings.  The significance of this passage is how social change happens and addresses the stuggle.  At least one class has to be consciousness to overcome the struggles.
