I go into this matter in greater detail in this post on Chicago
Photography, which appears under the title "The action is at flickr"

http://groups.google.com/group/chicago_photography/browse_thread/thread/d9dba42f53c2a636?hl=en

I'll give you the condensed version. A hacker gained moderator level
access to my groups and changed the settings on most of them, one of
which ended up being deleted for alleged TOS violations in my (brief)
absence. Google never wrote to me about the deletion. When I followed
their procedure, posting a report of the problem to the Googlegroups
help forum, after finding that there was no more direct way of
reporting this breach in the site's security, I found that Google
couldn't be bothered to respond to a report of an intrusion into their
system. That system is, judging from what I've since read, grossly
insecure, and Google just doesn't seem to care.

How does one respond to such a reality? By not getting more deeply
invested in the future of a service than is justified by the level of
dedication seen out of those running it.

This was going to be where we - as soon as there was more of a "we"
present, than just a few good sports I rounded up at Kopi - would be
posting our essays, stories, poetry and other creative work, but under
the circumstances, that doesn't seem like such a good idea, any more.
Instead, the primary companion to the Hell's Waiting Room Flickgroup
will be this community journal at Livejournal:

I'll keep this group going as long as I can, using it as an update
group, in which I (and maybe a few other people) briefly talk about
what is happening on the associated groups elsewhere, with links to
the material there. "So, this discussion group has suddenly turned
into an overglorified twitter?" Basically - yes. Exactly. If we lose
the old update notices, the loss won't be heartbreaking. We'll just
set up a new update group elsewhere. Or I will, depending on what the
turnout ends up being.
