Hi,

I am at the very beginning to get all this newsgroup stuff working.

I am using tin with Linux.

Tin is authenticating me automatically now and reads a handful of
groups.

An article says I need to force reload the complete list of groups,
but up to now I have no success...

Any help available?

I would have practiced first, on a "simpler" setup,
to see what the files are supposed to look like.

https://news.aioe.org/

tin -g nntp.aioe.org
q

*******

I tried the test, and these are the artifacts.

.newsrc
.tin
nntp.aioe.org
serverrc 416 bytes
.oldnewsrc 235 bytes
newsgroups 2,491,479 bytes

If I

mv newsgroups newsgroups.old

then

tin -g nntp.aioe.org

it downloads a new copy of "newsgroups"
and puts it in that directory.

If the file is a couple megabytes, that means
your E-S is authenticated, if the newsgroups
file is very short (1KB), that means authentication
did not happen.

*******

The full-qualified domain name error, refers to the
local node, and nobody cares about that :-)

How do you know it is authenticating you properly? What is the handful
of groups? Do they have something in common like they all start with
eternal-september. ?

Sounds like you are NOT authenticating properly.

I haven’t configured tin in more than 20 years, and never used it
regularly. If you were using slrn, I could help with that.

More information needed.

I found that I first have to connect to the Eternal September server
before refreshing the list of newsgroups. That is, I have to subscribe
to at least one newsgroup (even a newsgroup that I do not really want)
and download messages from it.

I am using an older version of Thunderbird, but this is not a
Thunderbird problem. I do not have to connect to the AIOE server to
refresh its lis of newsgroups.

E-S requires that you be logged in to access groups outside the
eternal-September.* hierarchy, and that included accessing the list of
groups. However, you do not have to SUBSCRIBE to any group in order to
do that.

'y'ank toggles the complete list of groups, though I don't really know
why you'd have to do this.

There's a mailing list for tin-users.

Because it's a very good newsreader and still actively maintained.

There's a man page as well.

Here's a web copy of it:

<https://www.mankier.com/1/tin>

Might be something there, though I think you may have to get the list of
groups from your newserver outside of tin.

Nothing wrong with tin, though I like slrn myself.
