How to Fix Excel When It Fails to Launch in Safe Mode
Excel is a powerful and versatile spreadsheet application that can help you organize, analyze and present data. However, sometimes Excel may encounter problems that prevent it from opening normally or in safe mode. Safe mode is a diagnostic mode that allows you to troubleshoot Excel issues by disabling add-ins, extensions and customizations that may be causing conflicts or errors. In this article, we will show you how to fix Excel when it fails to launch in safe mode.

What Causes Excel to Fail to Launch in Safe Mode?
There are several possible reasons why Excel may fail to launch in safe mode, such as:

Corrupted or missing files or registry entries related to Excel or Office.
Incompatible or outdated add-ins, extensions or customizations that interfere with Excel's functionality.
Insufficient disk space, memory or system resources to run Excel.
Virus or malware infection that damages Excel or Office files.

How to Start Excel in Safe Mode?
There are two methods to start Excel in safe mode on a Windows PC:

Press and hold the CTRL key while clicking on the Excel icon on your desktop, taskbar or Start menu. Do not release the CTRL key until you see a message asking you if you want to start Excel in safe mode. Click Yes to confirm.
Use the Run command to open Excel with the /safe option. To do this, follow these steps:

If you are on Windows 11 or Windows 10, choose Start > All apps > Windows System > Run. If you are on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, choose Start > Run.
Type Excel /safe in the Run box, and then click OK.

If Excel opens successfully in safe mode, it means that the problem is not with Excel itself, but with one of the add-ins, extensions or customizations that are loaded when Excel starts normally. You can then try to disable or update them one by one to identify the culprit. To do this, follow these steps:

In Excel, click File > Options > Add-Ins.
In the Manage drop-down list, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
Clear the check boxes for all the add-ins and click OK.
Close and restart Excel normally. If Excel opens without problems, it means that one of the COM add-ins was causing the issue. You can then enable them one by one and restart Excel each time until you find the problematic one. You can then disable it permanently or check for updates from its developer.
If disabling COM add-ins does not solve the problem, repeat steps 1-4 for other types of add-ins, such as Excel Add-ins, Analysis ToolPak, Solver Add-in, etc.

How to Repair Excel When It Fails to Launch in Safe Mode?
If Excel fails to launch in safe mode or you have recurring problems opening Excel in normal mode, you may need to repair your Office installation. Repairing Office can fix corrupted or missing files or registry entries that may be affecting Excel's performance. To repair Office, follow these steps:

Close all Office applications.
If you are on Windows 11 or Windows 10, choose Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features. If you are on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, choose Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
Select your Office product from the list of installed programs and click Modify.
In the window that opens, choose either Quick Repair or Online Repair. Quick Repair takes less time but may not fix all issues. Online Repair takes longer but can fix more issues.
Click Repair and follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: Please repair only if you have your product key with you as sometimes it may ask for it again after the repair.
