New Here.

I haven't touched Usenet in more than 2 decades. Even then, I think I
just lurked.

I am mostly interested in interacting with Usenet from the console. It
seems like `slrn`, `tin`, and `nn` (defunct) are the top terminal-based
netnews readers. Are there any others?

Also, is it just me or is Usenet seeing an uptick in new users thanks
to things like the Fediverse and the Reddit API controversy?

Hi, welcome, it's good to have you back here on Usenet.
I use a GUI 'reader so I'll leave your question for others.

You know, that's not what he wrote, and there's really no way to mistake
what he wrote for what you wrote.

He named various well-known newsreaders that run in the terminal.

trn4 is also listed in the Debian repository.

New ones and returning ones.

I can't say I've particularly noticed increased traffic on the other 90

That would be Swiss, not Swedish. I know, the rest of us might not
care, but I expect they do. My Danish ex-wife hated to be called Dutch.

Otherwise: yes, I think there are some refugees from web forums here,
possiby more than before. I recall there was something of an influx
into comp.misc a little while ago when some Slashdot users were cross
with that service; I think there may still be a few there.

This explains so much about you now ;) (but at least you don't use GG)

'slrn' is my reader of choice, after having tried a few (although I
never used tin).

Probably.

GNUS ... the final frontier.

Heh. I left the command line behind when I graduated from KA9Q's
packet radio setup on DOS. My 'reader in those days though... was it
Pine? Alpine? something like that. Anyway, it was whatever Demon
Internet was dishing out in '94.

I use Gnus which runs in Emacs which runs in a terminal in my case. I've
had trouble finding a decent terminal for Windows. There's an unstable
Konsole which works OK though.

I guess I'm one of the new ones. I did use it a little in the 2000s
to see what the fuss was, but apart from a bit of browsing, didn't do
much more than that.

I came because I wanted to set up a private server with friends so we
could use IRC, and maybe share as common discussion forum. I thought
NNTP might be suitable, and that led me to seeing what was going on in
Usenet again. It was only after that I saw articles about a supposed
uptick in usage.

I've had enough of "platforms" where they are controlled by a single
company. It's no longer acceptable to me to move more towards an
internet where chat, messaging and other communication between us is
monopolised and controlled.

True, I don't mind monopolising *my own* communication. Thats what
the internet should be about, isn't it, each one of us being able to
take control and have a stake in how to communicate.

I hope so. (First post here! I probably should've made a new nym, but
it's not that important)

Looking at the history in this group here, I see a declining number of
posts each year until 2023, when it dramatically increased, but perhaps
that's just an artifact of how much history Usenet stores.

I've been trying out the Fediverse for a while. It works okay, with
plenty of bugs. I remembered Usenet existed when I saw that Google was
shutting down its peering.

Part of that increase in posting to E-S UseNet could be due to a
colledge somewhere Northern Europe-ish running a course introducing the
students to UseNet and requiring the students to post here-abouts.

Hopefully the students hang around .... and go UseNetting.

Part of it, but a lot of threads did mention Reddit and Fediverse.

Of course, that's still not many threads.
