Do you see all groups or only eternal-september.*?
If so, you can start subscribing to groups with topics you are
interested.

Do you suggest any interesting group?

I can, but you should tell more about your interests and languages
you speak.

I speak English and French.
Interests, I don't where to start, from 486 to raspbery pi, and from
ms-dos to linux. maybe some ham radio and gaming.

Have a look at the groups in comp.*, there is a raspi group, some Linux
groups.
In alt.*, some active computer groups exist too, but most of the groups
in alt.* are empty.
rec.radio.* is about radio, some ham groups exist.

Empty is no problem if you've got something to say. Say it, and see
if anybody replies.

After all, a room can be empty before you walk in it... but it's not
empty then!

A lot of the alt groups are not empty. I'm subscribed to the following linux
related groups.

$ ls -1 |grep -e linux -e shell
alt.comp.linux
alt.comp.os.linux
alt.linux
alt.os.linux
alt.os.linux.mageia
alt.os.linux.pclinuxos
comp.os.linux.hardware
comp.os.linux.misc
comp.os.linux.networking
comp.os.linux.security
comp.os.linux.setup
comp.unix.shell

Some of those rarely see articles, some frequently, but they are all active to
some degree.

well, no. And I noticed that sometimes groups that lay dormant for ages
spring to live when you ask the right question. Of course sometimes they
spring to live with people berating you for asking stupid questions. But
well, that's usenet.

The best way to test if a newsgroup is dead or just dormant is to
post a two word message saying "just testing" with "Test" as the
subject title... click send and then go and put the kettle on.

Generally, somebody will reply fairly promptly and point out the
error of your ways. So that means the group is dormant but there are
people lurking.

If you get no replies from the helpful Usenet police officers after
60 hours, then that group is well and truly dead and definitely
beyond resurrection. Unsubscribe!

Simples! ;-)

IMO, this is a ridiculous way to do it. Why would you enter a forum and
piss everybody off with a unnecessary test message. That's not a question.
Just send a post to the group you wish to participate in and ask if
there is anyone subscribed who cares to have conversation on the theme
of the group. Perhaps give a sample of the things you would like to
discuss. You can even ask a question and answer in a followup yourself
to get things going.
Doing a Test post is not going to get the same kind of response.

Yeap, unfortunately .... but if YOU, LucLan, were to make a post, YOU
might be responsible for them re-activating!! ;-P

I began life online with Compu$erve before they opened their gateway
to the Internet proper. Then I switched to a real Internet provider
just before Compu$erve were borged by America On Line. That was
when the real hordes of the great unwashed started trampling all over
the place and the Eternal September really began.

One of the AOL users' annoying characteristics was "me too" and
"I agree" posting, commonly disparaged as "Agreeing Out Loud",
hence <AOL> and </AOL> faux HTML tags to mock AOL posters'
newbie posting habits.
