I began life online with Compu$erve before they opened their gateway
to the Internet proper. Then I switched to a real Internet provider
just before Compu$erve were borged by America On Line. That was
when the real hordes of the great unwashed started trampling all over
the place and the Eternal September really began.
One of the AOL users' annoying characteristics was "me too" and
"I agree" posting, commonly disparaged as "Agreeing Out Loud",
hence <AOL> and </AOL> faux HTML tags to mock AOL posters'
newbie posting habits.
