Ray was INTOLERANT of massive spam originating at Google Groups and did
something about it, inspiring a few others to issue NoCeMs to counter
abuse as well.
I'm not sure Usenet users truly understand how important the counter
measures to the abuse originating at Google have been. We were going to
lose a whole lot of regulars due to it.
For once, knowledge that the abuse was occurring somehow made its
way into the Real World (tm). Even Google noticed that the abuse had
harmed its reputation among non-Usenet users. Of course, we were all
shocked that, rather than fixing what made Google Groups so attractive
to originating abuse, Google instead chose to blame Usenet itself.
Also, Ray's seamus jokes are hysterical.
