The film begins with the interview of Ayan Sanger, a singer who has newly acquired fame with his non-filmy songs. He tells the story of his experience of love in a flashback. A few years ago, in London, a chance meeting in a disco between Ayan and Alizeh happens and they hook up with each other. They get to know each other and become friends. Later, when they discover their respective partners are cheating on them, they break up with their lovers: Ayan with Lisa D'Souza and Alizeh with "Dr." Faisal Khan, and the two go to Paris to spend a week together. Aayan falls in love with Alizeh but does not tell her because she considers him to be only a "friend". One day, Alizeh stumbles upon DJ Ali, her ex-boyfriend/lover, who wants to reconcile. Partially confused, but still in love with him, Alizeh decides to go with DJ Ali, and so unintentionally stops hanging out with Ayan and they cease communication.

"...it is not a conventional love story or love triangle. It's a film that dwells deeply on relationships, heartbreaks and how love completes you, defines you and yet leaves you wanting for more. I have never had, in my entire career, a film that has come to me so fast, so organically and so from within."

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was first announced in November 2014. At the time, writer-director Karan Johar, who had previously helmed Student of the Year (2012), said that for the past year and a half, he had been developing a story that he needed to work on for several months. However, while he was in New York, the idea for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (named after a song from the 1956 film C.I.D. starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman) came to him and he wrote the screenplay in 30 days. When he came back to India, he spoke to the three lead actors and they all signed on immediately.

Johar stated that he was motivated to cast Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the film after getting to know them as a co-star in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet (2015), which marked Johar's second film role after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995).

Johar added that he was excited to cast Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after several unsuccessful attempts to cast her in his previous films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006).[6]

Fawad Khan, who had recently appeared in Johar-produced Kapoor & Sons (2016), was cast to play the role of a DJ, described as "not exactly a cameo as it becomes a backbone for a certain conflict of a character" in the film. It marked the final Hindi film appearance for Khan.[7]

Lisa Haydon also confirmed that she will appear in the film.[8] At the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016, Johar confirmed that Shah Rukh Khan had also filmed a scene for the film.[9]

Principal photography began in September 2015 with Sharma and Kapoor in London. At the end of September, the team filmed some portions in Paris.[11] In October, they began shooting in various locations in Austria, including the city of Vienna. Rai Bachchan joined the crew in Vienna in mid-October after the release of her film Jazbaa (2015).[12] In March 2016, Kapoor, Sharma, and Khan were seen filming in Mandawa, Rajasthan.[13] In July 2016, Johar tweeted a photo of Kapoor and Sharma on set in Mumbai for the last schedule.[14]

On 20 October 2016, Mukesh Bhatt said that his discussion with the Union home minister, Rajnath Singh, had been consequential, and affirmed that the film will be screened throughout the country without any violence. However, he promised that he would not make any more films with Pakistani actors.[17]

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 53% score based on 14 critic reviews, with an average rating of 5.4/10.[31] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating, the film has a score of 40 out of 100, based on four critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[32]

Raja Sen and Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com respectively rated 4/5 and 3.5/5 and said, "Thank you, Karan Johar for this film feels like a sob. Johar has improved massively as a storyteller, this film is more polished and assured than anything he's done before."[34] and, "As evident by his body of work, Karan Johar has a sweet spot for this attribute, in the splendidly romantic and richly satisfying Ae Dil Hai Mushkil."[35]

Subhash K. Jha of Deccan Chronicle rated 2.5/5 and said, "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is one good looking film with actors who epitomize human beauty."[38] Sweta Kaushal of Hindustan Times rated 2.5/5, saying "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil offers little in terms of story and fails to get the audience empathize or feel for the characters and events in the movie."[39]

She commends the singer on the fact that he's broken through and found a foothold in music, 'that too non-film,' and in a couple of lines, he calls his love 'aamir' -- which is to say the kind that cannot die.

Karan Johar's new film casts Kapoor in that clueless persona the actor has often inhabited, but chooses to hand the reigns of the narrative -- and, indeed, of the young man's heart -- to Anushka Sharma, who delivers a performance effervescent enough to win over cynics and yank at their kerchiefs.

Sure, this is a highly glossy film -- and only in a Johar production will people at a headphone party dance in choreographed fashion to the same damn song, and a bag from Shakespeare & Co contain clothes instead of books -- but the gloss, like foundational makeup, is there to hold these excruciatingly attractive people and their excruciating problems in place.

As the princely DJ, Fawad Khan has far too little to do in this film -- though even a role with him on-screen throughout the film wouldn't have justified the ridiculous kerfuffle his casting has caused -- but looks perfect for the part.

Now, it's not problematic that the film has these characters. It's problematic that it is obvious that the director's empathy is deeply invested in these characters, and as a result, in their shocking regressiveness.

However, the said mushkil-some balls and dil, have trouble bro-ing between Ayan and Alizeh, new BFFs in town. So Alizeh, who called Lisa a gold digger, hops on to BFF's private jet and flies off to Paris. That's stretching friendzone too far, you say? Nahin stupid! He is her best friend yaaaa!

The other important association, Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), too, is keeping its distance from the issue. A trade union specific to Bollywood, Gujarati, Marathi and Konkani films, with 22 bodies, each representing a craft such as direction, screenwriting, make up etc, FWICE addresses grievances of its members under each of these bodies.

Apart from the story, the powerful acting by all the lead actors and the cameos by Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt added to the film. What also worked in favour was the brilliant music composed by Pritam, not to forget both quirky and romantic lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

If you walk into a Karan Johar film expecting subtlety, the joke is on you. The director has made a successful, nearly 20-year career out of using his films as vehicles to showcase stunning places, gorgeous people, and grand emotions. His unabashed preference of style (often over substance) and lavishness over logic has come to define his brand of cinema, so much so that audiences not only let him get away with it, but even look forward to his inflated-in-every-way productions by now.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil released worldwide on 28 October 2016 coinciding with the festival of Diwali.[2] The film's soundtrack was composed by Pritam, lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and songs sung by Arijit Singh.

Normally, Perry's films see sharp second weekend tumbles of 50-60% asthe fan base rushes out on the first week. But with the timely Halloweentheme, many moviegoers were still interested in spending this final weekendbefore the pumpkin holiday seeing Madea dish out her patented brand ofhumor. Even with post-Halloween erosion, Boo!is set to become the second highest grossing film ever in Perry's directingcareer behind only 2009's Madea Goes to Jailwhich did $90.5M. A final tally of $70-75M may result.

Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard failed to pull in much of a crowdfor their latest Robert Langdon film Inferno whichopened to $14.9M from 3,576 locations for a mild $4,156 average. Moviegoerinterest was lackluster as the PG-13 pic did not even come close to theresults of its two predecessors. The DaVinci Codebowed to $77.1M in 2006 and 2009's follow-up Angels& Demons debuted to $46.2M - both in prime mid-May slotsin the early part of the summer movie season. Those have stood as the twobest live-action openings ever for Hanks, but clearly fans were not excitedto revisit that world this time around.

Reviews were lousy for Inferno whichalso turned off ticket buyers. The Sony release carries a $75M budget -reasonable for a franchise film anchored by a major star. Overseas marketsare being counted on big time here and the global cume is just under $150Malready with top markets China and Japan launching this weekend.

More major Hollywood men followed with their latest films. Tom Cruise'sJack Reacher: Never Go Back tumbled58% in its second round to $9.6M for a $39.8M cume for Paramount. Ben Afflecksaw his action title The Accountant takein $8.5M, down 38%, for a $61.3M total for Warner Bros.

The Bollywood film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil openedat number ten with $2.2M from 302 locations for a solid $7,252 average. The FIP release is only the third foreign language film of 2016 to crackthe North American top ten this year.
