| PROGRAM OVERVIEW As the President and Congress focus on sparking the tepid economy and creating jobs ahead of November's elections, the cleantech sector is seen as an important piece to the economic recovery puzzle. However, some clean energy programs and tax incentives have come under extensive scrutiny in Washington casting into question their future viability.
In order for San Diego to maintain its global edge in cleantech innovation, it is imperative that San Diego clean tech innovators have a firm grasp on the latest developments related to federal cleantech policy, funding and contracting across all renewable energy sectors from wind to solar to geothermal and energy storage.
To help understand these important issues and the potential impacts to the cleantech sector, CONNECT in partnership with K&L Gates presents a Public Policy Forum on "Cleantech Guide to Working with the Government." K&L Gates has assembled a group of experienced professionals who will discuss the federal marketplace, from business development to funding to procurement to public-private partnerships to tax matters for companies and investors.
Directly following the presentations, presenters will serve on a panel moderated by Jim Waring, CEO, Cleantech San Diego to further delve into these issues and solicit real-time questions from the audience. Dirk Michels, Partner, K&L Gates, will also join the distinguished panel.
Arnold Klann, CEO/President, BlueFire Renewables: Drawing on his vast cleantech experience, Mr. Klann will discuss his first-hand experience with a myriad of government policies, incentives, tax incentives, earmarks, government agency spending and how they have affected his small business. He will also touch on how to build a successful company that can survive changing government policies and changing administrations.
Nick Leibham, Partner, K&L Gates LLP: Mr. Leibham will provide insight into the current political environment and speak to the current funding opportunities for cleantech companies with various government programs and agencies.
Dirk Michels, Partner, K&L Gates LLP: As a panel member, Mr. Michels will discuss how to navigate the complex cleantech government financing structures, including: local and State incentives, federal incentives, loan guarantees, tax credits and cash grants in lieu of tax credits has resulted in structures that are unique to the U.S. market.
