Dear Students,
I am very impressed with all the hard work that each one of you is putting into this learning effort. Congratulations!
Please see comments from the judges in the attachment. The following are my comments:
1. Making presentations is an art and it takes time and effort to learn it. Good thing is we get better with each presentation. There are two days of workshops to learn about presentation skills. But for the purpose of this workshop I shared a few points in my introductory talk with you. I encourage all of you to incorporate some of those practices in your presentations. Remeber in the real world you ability to effectively write and present what you know is going to be your huge asset. So practice as much as you can.
2. Presentation is like story telling. The purpose is to share knowledge and keep the audience entertained. When we do research projects like these, we learn so much that we try to put everything in our presentation. If you do not have enough time to present everything, there is no need to discuss everything. In this energy workshop we have two mediums to share your knowledge - writeup and presentation. In the writeup you can include a nice report on what you learned. Then for your presentation, pick some of the main points from your writeup and weave a nice story around it. Also, as per
Brad's advice, your first slide should address - "hey mom this is what i am going to talk about".
3. Please email me your presentations. I am still missing a few presentations from the first session. I have suggested the use of Drop Box to do it efficiently.
4. The main purpose of this workshop is to learn in a fun atmosphere with no pressure; (except the fact that we have two weeks deadline). Yesterday I observed that students are doing excellent job in their teams. But I saw less interaction among teams. Let us develop a culture of teaching and learning from eachother. The common goal for the whole group is to weave a nice story around energy sources - solar, wind, nuclear, biofuel, and ocean. We want all the presentations to act as essential pieces of the whole story.
I am attaching a presentation from Professor Nathan Lewis from Cal Tech. It is a bit old presentation, but you may be able to pick some good ideas. All the best for the next session. Please feel free to shoot me an email if you have any question or comment.Regards,Priyank
