Steer and focus your attention high, so you're viewing the road as whole and not just the few feet in front of you.
GET THE BIG PICTURE Establish a 360-degree area of awareness around your vehicle at all times. Use your eyes to scan the area in front of you and your mirrors to monitor what's beside and behind you.
KEEP YOUR EYES MOVING Focusing on any object for too long reduces your peripheral vision. Avoid this by keeping your eyes moving at least every 2 seconds to keep your central and peripheral vision from becoming fixed. Check your mirrors every 5–8 seconds with quick glances.
LEAVE YOURSELF AN OUT When possible, maintain a cushion of space on all four sides of your vehicle. You can create space in front of your vehicle by slowing down so that you're following the car ahead of you at a safe distance given the road conditions. Keep space to your sides and rear by avoiding traffic packs and not traveling next to other vehicles or hugging the center line. Slow down and stay to the right to give tailgaters a chance to pass.
MAKE SURE THEY SEE YOU Use your signals to make other drivers aware of your planned moves, and avoid placing yourself in the blind spot of other vehicles. If needed, use your horn to get the attention of a driver who doesn't see you.
