The Private Transport Services Ministry is to introduce a system where commuters could lodge complaints against private bus services via Short Message Service (SMS).

Ministry Secretary Padmasiri Jayamanna told Ceylon Today the proposed plan will come into effect from this week. Complaints about bus services can be sent via SMS to the hotline 071-6550-000 that commuters already use to make verbal complaints.
"So far passengers were only allowed to call and lodge complaints.

From next week onwards they will be allowed to message the complaint to us," he said.
Complaints regarding harassment of women in buses can also be lodged by sending messages to the same number. Jayamanna said while encouraging women to complain about harassment inside buses.

He said according to the information provided in the complaint, the ministry will direct the police and the officials of transport authorities to take necessary action.
According to Jayamanna, 90% of the complaints are received about the short distance bus services as these were used by more commuters.

"There is a reduction of complaints received about inter-provincial bus services. However, a lot of complaints are received about intra-provincial bus services. We are working together with Provincial Road and Passenger Transport Authorities to take necessary steps to address these issues faced by commuters," he added.
