CALL FOR PAPERS - “WESTERN ESOTERICISM AND THE ART OF TRANSLATION"
THE SEVENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ISRAELI NETWORK FOR THE ACADEMIC STUDY OF WESTERN ESOTERICISM (INASWE)
Organizing and Scientific Committee: Prof. Boaz Huss (founder, INASWE and Vice-President ESSWE), Dr. J. H. (Yossi) Chajes (founder, INASWE), Prof. Tzahi Weiss

Western Esotericism is generally characterized by adaptations of ideas, themes, and systems of thought that were conceived by western writers as originally external to their own intellectual world. This could be related to the real or presumed ancient period of the source or to its distant (often - “oriental") geographical locus, to its language (Latin, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic) or to its other unusual characteristics. Given this stance, western writers tended to adopt hermeneutical approaches dependent on different modes of “translation", in its original Latin sense of "carrying over to the other side". These writers “translated" presumed external sources into their own "languages", both metaphorically and literally.

The upcoming INASWE conference, to be held in Ra'anana (18 January 2017), will aim to examine the various ways in which thinkers and writers related to Western Esotericism "translated" their sources by producing and using translations of esoteric texts, by commenting upon them, and by adapting esoteric themes or systems of thought to new contexts.

The Organizing Committee welcomes proposals for papers, particularly those that engage with the above theme. Proposals must be submitted by 15 November 2016 to INA...@GMAIL.COM. Graduate students are asked to request that their supervisors send a letter of recommendation in tandem with the lecture proposal.
