MilkyWay Railroad is the 368st chapter of the Doraemon manga series. It was adapted into episodes of the same name in both the 1979 anime series and 2005 anime series. It was also adapted and fully expanded into Doraemon: Nobita and the Galaxy Super-express.

Suneo narrates his experience of traveling on SL train to his friends, leaving them with bad taste as it's impossible for them to go on a same trip like him. After complaining to Doraemon and recieving a scolding, Nobita notices that Doraemon has dropped a "Galactic Express Ticket: Earth to Nebula Hateno".

After getting the unsuspecting Doraemon into telling him how to use the ticket, Nobita annouces to Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo that he'll be going on a trip with the train at the mountain, bragging that he'll bring back a lot of pictures before leaving.

Later that night, Nobita secretly leaves the house with Take-copter and follows Doraemon's instruction by clipping the ticket with a pair of pliers, with Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo arrive to confirm his claim. Before Gian could beat up Nobita, the train arrives and pick ups Nobita, with the conductor allowing his friends to board the train as well despite them not possessing a ticket. Despite being suspicious about the conductor's claim, the four of them board the train which soon leaves for the space. Abroad the train, despite trying to enjoy the scenery, the four's suspicion thickens as except for the conducter and themselves, there is no other person on the train, the conductor's strange remark about there being no more passenger after "that thing" was created, and that the train shall not stop anywhere until it reaches the one and only destination.

The train finally arrives at "Nebula Hateno", the planet at the edge of the galaxy where one side doesn't have even a single star in the sky. Realizing that there is no reason to sightseeing at the place, Nobita pleads the conductor to take them back home, but is replied that the train will not be going on any trip against and will be scraped since "that thing" has taken its place. The conductor then gives them a farewell and leaves, trapping the four of them on the planet for the rest of their days. Fortunately, Doraemon, who knows of the trip's destination, quickly arrives and save the four from their predicament with "Anywhere Door", with the narration reveals that it is in fact the gadget that has taken SL Train's prominence in traveling to faraway location, resulting in the latter's abolition.

The film opens with an unknown ship stalking a steam train travelling through space then cuts to Suneo bragging to his friends about his trip on an Express Train. Nobita appears looking very worried as Doraemon has been missing for a few days. Nobita returns home to learn that Doraemon had arrived, he explains that he had acquired tickets for a Galactic Express Train from 22nd century, where the train's destination and travelling time is unknown.

That night, Nobita and Doraemon get on the express and Nobita later expresses concerns about missing school, Doraemon reassures him that he can use the Anywhere Door and return home. The next day, Nobita invites his friends to the Galaxy Express. Gian and Shizuka agree, except Suneo, who wants them to join him instead. Though hesitant at first, Suneo also joins them. The train has 58 carriages though 8 are visible from outside. Each carriage has 5 rooms. Nobita and his friends stay in Carriage no. 7. The train engages in a mock battle where the main characters the Anywhere Door no longer works.

Once the train arrives at the destination, the carriages separate and they meet kids from the 22nd century who constantly insult them for being from the 20th century. They initially split up into three groups, with Nobita and Doraemon going to the Western planet, where they become the sheriff and defeat all the challenges, Shizuka going to the Fantasy planet where she is the first picked out of seven Snow Whites while Gian and Suneo go to the Ninja planet where they fail miserably even with a tool that lets them cheat. Once they are all done, they decide to visit the Dinosaur planet on the next day.

Meanwhile, an evil force of parasites called Yadori which had spied on the express train earlier plan to make humans their hosts by taking over their bodies. On the day the main characters visit the Dinosaur planet, a parasite takes over the person who works at the Control Center, another parasite also takes over one of the kids from the 22nd century and leaves the others on an outlying asteroid.

The main characters figure out something is wrong once all of the dinosaur robots stop working. They decide to report about it to the Control Center in the main planet but have to flee when all of the dinosaur robots are out to attack them. When they arrive back in the main planet, they find out smoke coming out from the Main Control Center. When Gian and Suneo are in the main control center to investigate what happened, Suneo is captured by the parasites and taken control by Yadori 009. Yadori 009 tricks his friends and locks them up after which Yadori 007 reveals that Yadori is set to conquer the galaxy. After most of the Yadori force leave, the captain of the train rescues the captives, imprisons Yadori 009 and decides to take the train to another planet for safety.

However, the train crashes en route on an abandoned planet. On the planet, the captain finds an electronic cave map which Gian later follows to explore caves, but ends up getting lost along with two future kids. Shizuka, who earlier unknowingly defeated a Yadori with a gun, finds another anti-Yadori gun which they use on Yadori 009, who has jumped from Suneo's body to Nobita's. They also relocate Gian through his footprints and manage to get the train out of the mountain. Gian also discovers the two other kids from the 22nd century and a train stuck in the cave, he then uses the tool from the Ninja planet to escape.

When they are preparing to leave, Yadori force finds and attacks them resulting in a large battle, the humans then shoot their anti-Yadori guns and free all of the humans under their control, however the main leader of the Yadori then uses a gigantic robot which could not be defeated using the gun leading to the humans fleeing. Nobita, however hides behind a rock and when the leader attempts to take control of him, Nobita shoots and kills the leader.

Doraemon, after a three-day absence, returns with tickets for the Galaxy Super-express, a mysterious express train from outer space which comes only once in a year, leading to various theme park-planets and adventure worlds before landing on its ultimate destination, the largest theme park planet in the galaxy. Nobita and the gang eagerly joins the trip, but their fun vacation into space is cut short when they're attacked by parasitic aliens with an Assimilation Plot.

This time, Doraemon is going silver in keeping with the familiar Hibiya Line colours and emphasising the shiny new Tokyo Metro 13000 series trains. In line with the introduction of platform doors across the line, the trains will be the four door variety and will also make use of the new steering bogies for increased safety and comfort. The three screen displays will also introduce information in many different languages, and the trains will also be equipped with Wi-Fi as well as much more free space to make the journey more comfortable for passengers using wheelchairs and strollers.

The Odakyu Line extends from Tokyo through Kanagawa, and its major station Noborito is used by an average of over 160,000 passengers daily in 2017, making it the 5th busiest station operated in Odakyu. With the time schedule revision in March 2018, the rapid express began to stop at this station, and along with the significant increase in the total number of trains making stops, Noborito Station became extremely convenient and accessible, however its awareness in the Tokyo area remained relatively low for its size.

The Fujiko F. Fujio Museum in Kawasaki-city exhibits the works including original pictures of manga artist Fujiko F. Fujio, known as the creator of the world-famous Doraemon, famous to all Japanese, and partners with Noborito Station, its closest station.

It was essential for the central piece of the project to draw attention from most users, so the station sign, a consistent design throughout all 70 stations of the Odakyu Line, was redesigned into an Noborito original.

There was an option to prominently feature Doraemon in the design. Although, the station users vary, and the design needed to be considerate of those who feel uncomfortable with, or lack interest in Doraemon.

Therefore, much care was put into finding just the right amount of Doraemon to blend into the design, as too much spotlight on the mascot will foster a negative image, given that the designs were intended for a public space.
