Canada-India relations are reeling from the announcement that Canadian security agencies had uncovered evidence linking the Indian government to the assassination of an Indian-born Canadian citizen in British Columbia earlier this year. Canada Institute Associate Xavier Delgado outlines what's at stake for both countries and their allies in the Indo-Pacific.
"The annual exercises are a means of building expeditionary readiness," said Command Sgt. Maj. James R. Gordon, the senior enlisted leader with the Indiana National Guard, adding they also reinforce the U.S. commitment to its allies and partners in the Pacific region.
"Our squads, platoons and companies worked side-by-side with our Pacific allies, conducting bi-lateral training operations that will pay dividends for many years to come," Gordon said. "At the same time, our battalion and brigade staffs worked with the leadership of our allied partners, gaining the confidence and building the friendships that are always needed when retaining and building successful alliances."
"There was a typhoon that threw the brigade a huge curveball because all of a sudden, it has to plan on moving hundreds of Soldiers and equipment and get Soldiers into living areas that could withstand the storm," he said. "We just had to adapt and be flexible, and maneuver the best we could, but it was awesome to get some unexpected training."
While crews rushed to search for survivors and clean up scenes of chaos on Caribbean islands, Haitian authorities issued travel restrictions and opened emergency shelters ahead of the storm's arrival.
In our news wrap Wednesday, Israeli police and Palestinian youths fought in the streets of Jerusalem after the death overnight of a Palestinian teenager. There was speculation that the killing was revenge for the deaths of three Israeli youths. Also, Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the season, was expected to strengthen into a hurricane.
Tropical Storm Arthur neared hurricane strength in the Atlantic Ocean today. By late in the day, it was centered roughly 200 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina. It could skim the Outer Banks of North Carolina tomorrow. A swathe of about 200 miles of North Carolina coast is now under a hurricane warning on this week that brings Fourth of July vacationers. Arthur is the first named storm of the Atlantic season.
With thousands of sanctions already imposed on Russia to flatten its economy, the U.S. and its allies are working on new measures to starve the Russian war machine while also stopping the price of oil and gasoline from soaring to levels that could crush the global economy.
That risk has the U.S. and its allies seeking to establish a buyer's cartel to control the price of Russian oil. Group of Seven leaders have tentatively agreed to back a cap on the price of Russian oil. Simply speaking, participating countries would agree to purchase the oil at lower-than-market price.
Arguably, since 2016 the United States and other countries have already augmented their relationship with Taiwan, which has helped Taipei to weather the diplomatic storm and the Tsai administration to retain its legitimacy. However, countervailing efforts should be more systematic and Beijing should be made aware that such responses will be automatic. This kind of messaging will be particularly important should Tsai be re-elected next year and if Beijing decide to act on its threat to punish Taiwan by stealing every one of its remaining official diplomatic allies.
There is now nothing preventing the Democratic Leader from calling these measures up for immediate consideration and passage by the full Senate. The legislatures of other NATO allies like Canada, Norway, Poland, and Germany have already ratified them.
American leadership in the world has made possible the peace and security our country enjoys today. That leadership is helping encourage our allies to make sufficient investments in their own capabilities to face down shared threats.
Let me talk a little bit about her trip to Manila. As you know, the Philippines is one of our oldest treaty allies. This is the first visit by a U.S. Secretary of State since 2002, and that was when Secretary Powell was in Manila. With this visit, she will have been to all four treaty allies in East Asia, and those would be Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and of course, the Philippines. I think this is, if my memory is right, probably the first time a Secretary of State has been to four of our Asian treaty allies in a first year in office.
So in total, the United States Government has provided $14.2 million to assist in the aftermath of the storms to date. And as my colleagues mentioned, we continue to work with the Government of the Republic of Philippines on the stabilization of this area.
