After nearly three decades of economic stagnation, Japan’s newly selected Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, said that the country needed to undergo major reforms. Beyond the typical structural economic reforms, he pointed to gender as an aspect of Japanese culture that also needed to change. Abe asserted that discrimination and barriers to women participating more actively in Japan’s political and economic life was holding the economy back. In the next two paragraphs, I will outline the traditional subordinate role of women in Japanese culture and then briefly explain why Prime Minister Abe says change is urgently needed.

The traditional Japanese society sets women at an obedient position in a male-dominated world, which involves aspects of family construction, corporate culture and politics. As a family-rooted society, women’s role is extremely emphasized in Japan, considered to be the one taking care of all their families and households. According to a survey, 70% of Japaness women left their work for a decade or more after having their first kid. Some people even hold an extreme opinion that women should be a “baby-making machine” for the well-being of the whole society. Besides, in traditional corporations, women are considered as an assistant to men, as men should chase after a grand career whereas women value a good marriage more than a career success. Women are keeping away from management roles as a practice in Japanese companies. In addition, politics is as well mainly ruled by men rather than female power. According to statistics, women only hold 8% of seats in the lower house of the diet, and 19% in the upper house. Political world is considered to be a man’s battle field in traditional Japan.

These conservative ideas towards women are holding back Japan’s development in various ways. First, faced with a low fertility rate and an aging population, Japan are in great need of new-borns. And according to Kathy Matsui, Goldman Sach’s chief Japan strategist, “higher female empl;yment could actually help raise, not lower fertility rates.” So to ease the current aging problem, the government needs to encourage and release women from staying at home and enter the labor market instead. http://www.51due.com/writing/more/sample59290.html

Second, Abe sets the women issue on top of his priorities because women are playing a vital role in saving the shriking workforce. As a result of the traditional perception of an unimportant role of women in the workplace, many jobs are designed for men since they are able to work for long hours and drink a lot in social activities, which is also one of the reasons of the male dominance at work. However, if the Japanese government could turn it around, as more and more women enter into offices, schools and other job markets, the shortage of labor force in Japan would be solved easily and GDP is predicted to increase by 15%. If top positions are offered to women, it also benefits the company of a stronger innovation abiility.

What’s more, such a change in politics by increasing females officials may lead to an increase in public healthcare services, which may creates an advance in narrowing the gender discrepancy in life expectancy. A mild image represented by women may also post an advantage in diplomatic activities.

In conclusion, the traditional perceptions towards women in Japan set rules to constrict women at home, which denies the female potential in achieving success both in their families and career. Abe’s government has realized the negative effects of a patriarchy society, and his moves towards a nation which emphasizes women’s role is out of a wish to increase fertillity rate and labor force to avoid a possible economic stagnancy in the future.-M
