NEW FACTORS IN ARGENTINE HONEY PRODUCTION

(Córdoba, Argentina, April 3, 2026) Beekeeping in Argentina is nearing the end of another positive and growing season in terms of estimated production volume.

The weather has contributed again to this successful year, although it's important to remember that many areas of the country haven't received this benefit or have only experienced it with limitations.

Among the positive factors that have emerged in recent years certain agricultural practices are important.

- CHANGES IN AGRICULTURE
- There is a growing awareness of the importance of soil conservation. Many of those who for 30 years promoted "no-till-sowing-with-chemical-fallow" in favor of RR soybean and corn technology packages (genetically modified and resistant to glyphosate and other pesticides) are now recognizing the importance of maintaining crops through the winter, even if their immediate profits are not attractive. In many areas, the formation of a very hard seedbed has significantly reduced the moisture retention capacity of an increasingly shallow soil profile, diminished the microbiota that once enriched our plains, and favored the development of fungi foreign to that soil and highly resistant. In addition to the use of mechanical tools to break up this seedbed, "cover crops" are being applied, which produce many environmental advantages that are clearly beneficial also for people and bees.

- The rising cost of agrochemicals, particularly fertilizers, and the loss of herbicide effectiveness against some species undesirable by farmers also contribute to these changes.

- The need to expand the soil profile, among other reasons, promoted the use of so-called "cover crops" (also "service crops") during the winter. It was found that these crops do not consume as much water and, on the contrary, their penetration enhances the soil's capacity to store water and also promotes carbon sequestration, particularly in carbon-poor soils, especially in areas closer to the tropics, outside the Humid Pampas where carbon has always been abundant.

- Continuing with the contribution to reducing fertilizer purchases, Vicia villosa is gaining ground year after year among the plants that promote nitrogen fixation in the soil.

- INCREASE IN PASTURES
- This goes hand in hand with the growing interest in cattle production and the expansion of pastures, which are now becoming more profitable. Among these pastures, alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is expanding. Likewise, new varieties of Melilotus spp., with the same flower production but greater leaf yield, constitute a renewed productive alternative for poorer and more saline soils. It's unnecessary to explain the importance of alfalfa and melilotus for honey production.

- SUNFLOWER REVALUATION
- In addition to what has already been said, the expansion of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivation for oil production is a trend we believe is partly driven by the unfortunate invasion of Ukraine by "the nostalgic tsarist, ex-KGB," but also by advances in seed selection for high-oleic sunflower production, which has recently entered the market and is already available in Argentina.
Only sunflower honey harvests exceeded 60 kg per hive in north-central Santa Fe province at the end of 2025. While not reaching those yields, the honey harvest from this crop was also excellent in the central part of the country.
This is a significant fact: the area sown with sunflowers in Argentina has increased from 1.7 million hectares in the 2021/2022 season to 3.1 million hectares in the 2025-2026 season (we're talking about a net increase of 31,000 km², larger than the entire area of Belgium, near 100% more in five years). This crop is gaining ground due to the new uses its oil offers.

- RECOVERY OF BRASSICACEAE
- The increased planting of rapeseed (Brassica napus) and carinata (Brassica carinata) is also adding value to beekeeping production in Argentina. While we are far from restoring the pollen contribution that was characteristic of wild Brassicaceae varieties (nabo, nabillo, nabón) that once covered the fields in winter 30 years ago, before the massive ecocide caused by glyphosate, as well as 2,4-D, glufosinate ammonium, and other harmful chemicals, this increase in rapeseed and carinata cultivation offers a growing number of beekeepers a valuable nutritional resource. It allows them to develop earlier colonies and a pollen starter reserve before other blossoms. (These are winter crops in Argentina, nothing or a few honey only).

- INCREASED DEMAND FOR BEES PER HIVE PER YEAR
These are some of the new developments; the rest of the usual productive activity continues as usual: native flora, fruit tree pollination and pollination for seed production, and natural or planted pastures and so on. This means that the demand for bee production is also increasing. We are seeing more and more beekeeping activity in the second half of winter, and for many, it extends into the first half of autumn (see links below). Many generations of bees need to be produced, especially considering the stress of agrochemicals, movements, and other factors. This has promoted many beekeepers to become professional queen bee breeders. Their professionalism and productivity are growing in tandem with the increasing demand from honey producers throughout the country.
