I'm starting to look around in Openstack and I'm wondering if there would be a way to integrate my ESOS cluster storages to my openstack landscape.
I could mount a FC luns to my cinder host but I would prefer to have my cinder volumes shared directly from ESOS.

Did someone tried this already?

Hi Martin,

I'm not familiar with OpenStack, but I have at least heard of it... if
you're not presenting the storage across the SAN (Fibre Channel in
your case), then when you say "cinder volumes shared directly from
ESOS" would this be across IP? Like some "cinder" service or something
running on the ESOS box?

From what I know, It would be a daemon running on ESOS accepting commands from the controller node (openstack controller) to create iscsi volumes.  On a linux node, the cinder service only uses a pre-defined volume group names cinder-volumes.  It only create/delete lun created in this volume group.  I'm not sure how it would integrate with ESOS.  I'm starting to scratch the surface of Openstack, so I'm not a good example of how it should be working.  Maybe it would end up writting a "driver" for cinder specificaly for ESOS.  Like I think they did for Equalogic ISCSI.  I'll continue my testing and see how it really works.

Hi Martin,

I have medium knowledge in OpenStack and this should be the way to go:

Take a look at the diagrams at this post for physical distribution of the communications http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/openstack/dev/31432
Investigate at the Cinder dirver table and the Cinder project code where to start. Maybe there is another driver that can be easily ported to ESOS.

https://github.com/openstack/cinder/tree/master/cinder/volume/drivers

Ill take some time by myself for the same goal. Could be a great feature that will boost ESOS usage!

Has there been any news on the Cinder driver front?

Nothing that I'm aware of.
