The horror genre made its mark in Bollywood with low budget films produced by the Ramsay Brothers. The Ramsay movies focused on masked monsters, old mansions, sex and haunting songs sung by wandering spirits.
In recent decades, the horror genre has risen to scarier levels. But some horror movies still follow the old spooky-tired format. The latest film in this latter category is Amavas, which claims to have never seen before scary VFX.
Amavas is about a rich businessman Karan (Sachin Joshi) and his lover Ahana (Nargis Fakhri). Karan wants to propose to Ahana in Paris, but Ahana wants the ritual to take place in Karan's summer mansion in remote England.
This Friday, we will have two movies vying for the audience's attention. One is a horror film called Amavas while the other is a satire titled The Fakir In Venice. After a long time, we have an out and out horror movie at the theatres which might get some response at the box office. But the audience has been spoiled with Stree, which was a perfect blend of comedy and horror, so we wonder if a true-blue scare-fest will excite the audience or not. As for The Fakir In Venice, this Farhan Akhtar-Annu Kapoor film has been ready for release for a while now. But reports suggest that due to production issues, the film got delayed. Director Anand Surapur had revealed to IANS, "It was purely attributed to production issues. Last two years, we were working and sorting out internal issues and let A.R. Rahman Sir create good music for the film." Finally, the project is ready for release. Let us tell you a bit more about both the films here. I listened to film stories as bedtime tales, got a library card as soon as I could read, and was taken to the theatre when I was old enough to stay awake. So, I grew up to love books, movies and plays. I have been writing about them for the better part of a quarter century, won a National Award for film criticism, wrote several books, edited magazines, had writings included in anthologies... work has been fun!
