I've been searching this for the past hour or so, and only found one relevant topic, which didn't explain anything. I've been using the FXAA mod for a while, and really want to use it with the other textures I've installed, but it crashes without the 4GB mod.

I'm not sure what is the problem, FXAA does not depend on the way the game is launched, it's dll is activated because have preference being at the game's folder over that at your Windows folder structure. Unless you installed some other mod that places d3d9.dll at Skyrim install folder, case of ENB series for example and you need to rename FXAA d3d9.dll and chain it at ENBseries ini file.

FXAA in no way affects the game's files so reinstalling the game will not help at all. As I told before, the only requisite for FXAA to work is it's files being at the same folder Skyrim.exe is, it's d3d9.dll is automatically launched instead the original which should be at the Windows structure (outside the game's responsibility). On the other hand, you may need the original d3dx9_26.dll and d3dx9_40.dll (which should be included into the dx9 for windows 7 but seen it is not by default). Search your C: for them, install if they are not present or only inside cab files.

Still, when I use skyrim4gb's launcher, I don't get the FXAA mod with it. However, when I launch using Steam, I do. I know that skyrim4gb creates its own TESV.exe, which is why I tried placing the laucher in the skyrim file. Do you think this could be the problem? And if so, how can I stop skyrim4GB from creating it's own TESV.exe?

To anyone who may come across this, you have to first install the FXAA mod, and then copy the d3d9.dll that was created in your "skyrim" folder to the "exes" folder located wherever you have placed skyrim4gb.

Sounds like you botched something regarding the config files of FXAA. If you moved them into the exe folder for 4GB Skyrim, move them back to the main \Skyrim\ folder. If you didn't move them to the exe folder, try moving them there (I'm personally still running v1.1 at least until 1.4 is confirmed working and doesn't introduce new problems).

If you've downloaded someone else's config file for your version of FXAA this could also be the problem. The different versions have different config files and using the wrong version config for your version of FXAA is known to cause this issue. If you've been tinkering with the config or the shader.fx file of your FXAA you may have introduced a syntax error that will also cause the CTD you're describing, in this case reinstall FXAA with the original config files.

To quickly resolve your problem, we recommend download and use d3dx9_26.dll Fix Tool. If you have technical experience and you want to install a DLL file manually, please select your version of Windows and download d3dx9_26.dll, after that copy it to the appropriate place using the instruction below, it will fix dll errors.

Some applications or games may need this file to work properly. If d3dx9_26.dll is missing, whenever you start the application/game you may experience various kinds of errors. To fix those errors, please read the Recommended Solution below.

If a program or game requires d3dx9_26.dll, then Windows will check for the .dll file before launching the program. If any issue is detected, it will display an error and the program won't launch. A few examples of the errors are:

  • This application failed to start because d3dx9_26.dll was not found.
  • The program can't start because d3dx9_26.dll is missing from your computer.

  • d3dx9_26.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vender for support.

These errors are displayed when this DLL file is missing from your PC, has issues, or that it is corrupted. In such cases, the solution is to reinstall the DLL file on your computer or place it in the program or game that requires it.

There are two ways in which you can install this DLL file on your computer. You can either copy the file to the installation folder of the application that requires the DLL or register it using Microsoft REGSVR. Here are the instructions for both the methods:

Hmm.. Well I believe there was a file already called d3dx9_26.dll in my SA folder. So now I believe I have a corrupted version of it or something. I don't want to have to reinstall. Would it be piracy to have someone send me that file?

You may have some more luck using these files, when launching the game you'll have to use the "-window" parameter (make a shortcut to the exe file, edit it's target to have -window after the quotes).

Thank you SO much, mikeswi. I had an old version of DirectX. I updated and now it works. It's slightly buggy but oh well. But there's a problem. It's still pretty much full screen. It's a huge window and it's hard to drag around. Is there a way to make the window itself 800x600 instead of 1024x768?
