As usual I am writing another message to ask you your opinion on a
subject related to something I found on Internet. This week I read an
article on the site of "The Economist" magazine about how Brazil is
dealing with poverty:
http://www.economist.com/world/la/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10650663
This report presents a scheme called "Bolsa Familia" that Brazilian
government developed to help poor people. Basically, the government
gives money to poor families on condition that their children go to
school. The report also says that many countries, including USA, are
using this scheme. Some concerns about this program are also
presented. I think the more serious of them is about the future of
this program. The scheme should not last forever, but it only should
continue until the communities that receive this help develop.
However, I think, many schools in Brazil are not yet good enough to
prepare people for a global economy. So, the government should invest
more in basic education.
So, what do you think? How your country deal or dealt with poverty?
I will really appreciate to see your opinion on this subject.
Thanks and regards,
Eduardo R.
Actually the article mention the possibility of theft, but it says
that World Bank found that most money really goes to poor people. I
don't think that this program is perfect, probably it can be improved.
However I think it can really help people since it incentive children
to go to school. It is important invest in schools, but it is also
important bring children to them. Many children in Brazil don't go to
school because they have to work, so if the government pay these
children to go to school then they can just study. Besides, in the
future they can get a better job and their own children will be able
to go to school without this help.
