Hi,

In a report this week in BBC News an American inventor is saying that
machines will surpass humans intelligence in 2029:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7248875.stm

In fact, he says that eventually man and machine will merge so that
the human intelligence and health can be improved.

So, what do you think? We are going to be part human and part machine
in the future? What could be the implications of this fusion?

Give your opinion, even if it is just one paragraph. The objective is
just practice writing and exchange ideas.

Regards,

Eduardo

Hi, Eduardo Rocha,

That´s other good question.

I´m sure technology are helping a lot our humans such as humans are developing
new technologies faster. Back to 1994 there was
a CNN new titled  "Is human chip implant wave of the future" (http://edition.cnn.com/TECH/computing/9901/14/chipman.idg/), now almost 15 years
later it´s true, already it´s possible to have microchips embedded in a human.

So, we can see the technologies being developing so fast that good news can show up
at anytime.
Although this fast developing are going well I don´t think that machines will develop
intelligence like human until 2029.

One of the most obscure theme of science is know how the brain work, how we can
think, how we are able to develop ideas to inferences so forth. Know how it work
is like to discover the cure for cancer and too many others disease.

I would like to live for more 80 years just for see how will be the technology in 2088.
Could you think ? Cool...

Take care

Ed.

For me these discovery like fantastic. Scientists make so wonderful
and unreal comlex things. I get ready to vote that they find as soon
as possible the cure for cancer and other disease.. They have to
defeat AIDS. I'm glad when scientists make useful discovery.

Well, revert to our topic I want to say in my houmble opinion most of
plain men will couldn't take advantage of machines that be clever like
human.

I'm sure that main task of our life in the nearest time become bitter
for resourses. And in cyberpunk we'll be fight with that machines.

Hi,

I have to say that I am not sure we are going to have machines as
intelligent as ourselves, at least until the end of this century. You
known, there are many incredible machines these days such as
computers, airplanes, spacecrafts, but they are nothing in comparison
to our brains. Actually our brains have created all these amazing
things.

If we created a computer more intelligent than ourselves, it would be
able to create a new computer even more intelligent. In its turn this
could create another more intelligent than any other. So, that would
be a infinite process that eventually would create a perfect entity. I
do not think that is possible.

I agree that in many aspects the computers or machines will surpass
our abilities. Presently, the computers already are able to process
information that anyone else can. So, maybe scientists should focus in
this aspects instead of try to create something that can beat humans
in all situations.

Cheers,

Eduardo R.

Hi Liu,

What do you mean?

Eduardo,

Liu used an interesting expression that we use when we want to
emphasize how much we agree with someone. Its like saying, "It's
impossible for me to agree with Eduardo more than I already do." By
using the negative, we create a greater positive!

It's a great expression, but if you're not familiar with it, it sounds
strange.

I've not known this expression.

Thanks!

Fine! When I've read at first time I also accepted it like the denial.

So thought ours talks we study language. I mean that we have a few
aims in our conversations.
Maybe we can use some special mark for parts where we want say
something about language or rules. I invite add it only for our
comfortable and everybody will decide use or not. For examle,

Mr Kurzweil(man from article) didn't say any definite. And I can't
say that I trust him. He didn't show facts to us.

<* didn't any - any use in negative sentence *>

Let me make a suggestion.

The best thing this group can do is to concentrate on the
conversations. The real benefit of this group is in using the English
that you are acquiring by reading and listening to things like the ESL
Podcast. Don't worry about rules and things like that. And don't worry
about making "mistakes" (Look at The Informed English Student #2 for
my opinion of "mistakes").

If you don't understand something, just ask the writer. This is called
"negotiating for meaning", and it's a valuable way for everyone to
improve their English.

This is the same advice I give the students in my classes.

Ops, I should have say: "I didn't known this expression".

Anyway, I think all of you understood what I mean. But as I said
before our mistakes will disappear with time. So, just keep writing!

Best regards,

I agree with you Warren, or I can't agree with you more :-)

I think if we write to the list and study English by listening
podcasts and reading interesting things, we will reduce a lot the
mistakes without be worried about them.

We all have some tips to give. My golden rule is to persevere ! Most people give up on learning foreign languages because they are too busy and don't prioritize the acquisition process.

By the way, thanks for the group. I joined in early in the morning.

All the best,

Josney
