Hello!

In the introduces e-mails, Eduardo ask me about my work. So, I think it could be interesting if each one tell a little about your job, company, college, school, and so on. With this, we could meeting better each other and practice the writing and reading English. What do you think?

I will start...

I'm a student of computer science at UFPR (Federal University of Paraná - Paraná is a state from Brazil), and I'm working in a laboratory of research in computer vision, image processing and computer graphics.

The team of this lab is composed for 2 professors with large experience, around 10 students of master degree, and 20 undergraduate students (including me).
In this lab, we have three principal lines of research: Tools for accessibility to people with special necessity, 3D virtual museums, and biometric and medical systems. I work in the biometric area.

Currently, I'm working specifically in a face detection and recognition system that uses video sequences captured from security cameras. The idea is to make a computer program that can recognizes people automatically in real time, using any camera (including security camera and webcam).

A lot of researchers around the world already work in this problem, but the currents methods have some limitations. So, I'm studying to make a new approach to the problem, trying to improve the results of the system.

In general forms, systems for facial biometrics have 4 steps. The first is a preprocessing in the image that was captured from camera, when we adjust some features for the image, like brightness and colours, to minimize the negatives effects of different illuminations conditions and the low resolution of the camera.
The second step is called face detection, when we detect where in the image are the persons. This is a very hard problem and we are spending much time to improve this step.
After all faces for persons of the image is detected, we need to cut them from the original image, and do some modification (like rotations, and resize) to standardize (this word exist?) all faces in a unique shape. This step is called normalization.
The last step is the recognition, when the systems compare the face normalized from the previous step, with a database with image of faces from person that  have been registered previously.

My results aren't so good yet. We can detect and recognition around 65% of people. Others researchers in the world already achieved better rates.
But, I already publish a paper describing my work in a Brazilian conference (SIBGRAPI). Nowadays I working in improvements to the systems to try to publish this in a international conference.

I had a Teacher of Graphical Computer that made researches at UNICAMP (http://www.ic.unicamp.br/)
for Graphical Analyze of Medical Images.

Well, someone here already know me.. I´m Eduardo Gonçalves (there is a lot of Eduardo here LOL),
I have degree in System of Information and work in a company making software for Railways.
Here we have too a lot of Java developer and some researchers from UNICAMP working for solve problems from railways,
they use technics like GA, Fuzzy and Neural Networks algorithms for embed  intelligence  in ours softwares.

I´m not a researcher, my actual occupation is named Technical Leader, the guy that take care of code quality
from the developers, help the Testers team, analyze the implementations impact  and so forth...

Start a MBA in Project Management is my goal for this year and study English is a hobby and a necessity for me.

My name is Eduardo Rocha and I study computing. In fact, I'm a PhD
student and before this course I did a MSc and a BSc in computing.
Well, I really like this science.

I've worked in a Brazilian center for weather forecast with parallel
computing and meteorological models, so now my research is in this
area. I am studying load-balancing applied to weather forecast models.
You know, in order to execute a forecast quickly you can use many
processors. But you don't know in advance if each processor will
receive the same amount of work. And if one processor receives less
work than another, then it will have to wait for the other processor
and, therefore, waste time. I'm studying ways to solve this problem.

I am an educator, and my goal is to help people become independent
acquirers (learners) and users of English. My tools are the classroom,
online tutoring, my web site - www.successfulenglish.com - research,
and writing. I work directly with students and, also, with other
teachers to help them become more successful.

My philosophy is the same as Dr. McQuillan's and many other language
specialists around the world: we acquire (pick up, or absorb) new
language (English) by reading and listening to easy-to-understand
language (English).

Hi Warren,

You said that we learn other language by reading and listening. But
what about speaking and writing. Actually, I've read and listened
English for many years and I am not fluent now. In fact, I can
understand pretty well, but I struggle to speak and write. What are
the techniques to improve speaking. I know that in order to learn
speaking you have to speak! But I don' feel at easy when I speak in
English. So, are there any technique to improve the confidence before
speak with someone?

Eduardo,

That's a very important question.

If you want to be fluent in a language, you are concerned about two
things. First, acquiring the language (Some people use the word
"learn." Many, like Dr. McQuillan and myself prefer the word
"acquire."). We automatically acquire English when we read or listen
to easy-to-understand English. Memorizing vocabulary or learning
grammar rules are not nearly as efficient or effective for this.

Second, there is using the new language that you have already
acquired. This is what you are talking about. And this is the
difficult part when you don't live in a country where English is
spoken. Listening and reading help, because we automatically imitate
(try to be like) someone that we admire and want to be like. But the
best thing to do is to make opportunities to use your new language.

Some of my students have found friends who are native English-
speakers. Some of my online tutoring students meet with me to practice
using the language they are acquiring by reading and listening. One of
them, an artist in Taiwan, has improved a lot in the last six months.
She reads and listens to easy-to-understand English all week and we
meet for only 30 minutes once a week to talk about her reading and
listening, Taiwanese and American culture ... whatever we want to talk
about.

One of the most important things this group could do is spend time
talking/writing about ideas and things that interest you. Ask each
other questions, then answer them. Talk about authentic (real, part-of-
life) things. Don't worry about exercises.

Another possibility would be to use something, like Skypecasts, to
talk to each other. I would consider organizing that if there is
enough interest.
