Hi people,

This week a read a story about the cheapest commercial car (take a
look at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7180396.stm). I would like
to discuss with you about this subject. What do you think about it?

It seems to be very good for poor people get their first car. It was
said that it meet the environmental requirements and it can boost the
Indian economy even more. But what do you think, wouldn't it be better
improve public transportation? I know that, this probably would not be
appealing, but I think that would be better to the environment and
next generations. Having a car is something very useful, I know. You
can go wherever and whenever you want. But public transportation is
cheapest and better for our already busy cities.

So, give your opinion.

Regards,

Eduardo R.

It cost only just $2500 US, 1lakhs (Indian currency).

Some configuration this car :

1 : Three color available (Red, Green, Yellow).
2 : 620 cc.
3 : 25 km/liter

This is a very big achievement. This is  very cheapest car in this world. Tata motor is India's largest automobile company.Tata's engineers  are world famous. I am also engineer and I respect the tata engineering.

Hello Eduardo Rocha.. nice topic...

This weekend I saw a Documentary at TV where was told about this subject.
Panama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panama) has a population of about 2.8 million and 460,000 vehicles according to the Panamanian Traffic Vehicle Registry. This is the highest per capita car population in Central America. There is 86 car for each 100 habitants.
In Europe the city with more per capita car population is Italy with 50 car for each 100 habitants. The documentary told that at Europe
this can be considerate exaggerated and their neighbor countries  don´t like too much.

This show a interesting thing (in my view point). In developed country the public transportation work fine and have a car
is not a necessity for life. Other side, at poor countries or developing countries the public transportation doen´t work and is precarious.
So, the dream of people is to buy a car and never more use the public transportation.

Other thing, with more vehicles circling  more taxes to pay and for the government  is better  help the people to buy a car rather than
to do big investments in public transportation. Wrong way to think... but in short time what they want is more money...

Take care!

Hi Amit,

Certainly it is a big achievement. Developing a car that costs only
$2500 should have been a really big challenge. But what about the
streets in Delhi? Don't you think that they will be more busy?

Here in Porto Alegre, the streets have each time more cars. I also
have one car, but I try to use it as less as possible. Typically I go
to the University by bus. The public transportation here is good (not
much) and fairly cheap (at least in comparison to the fuel I put in my
car).

So, the developing countries should think more about the kind of
transport they want. I've read that in USA the people usually commute
by car (Warren, what can you tell about that?). But I think this way
is too expensive. In the other hand, Europe seems to use more public
transportation (And you Robert, How is it like in Vienna?).
Personally, I think that public transport is better, because it is
cheap, pollutes less and is more efficient (I mean, a bus, for
example, transports many people using less space of the streets).

We have a lot of cars in the U.S.! Probably too many!

I don't have the numbers for the whole country, but here in California
(in 1998) there was 1/2 car for every person. Today it is probably
more. A few years ago, in the area around San Francisco, there was
almost 1 car for every person.

Only a few of our large cities have the kind of public transportation
that you find, for example, in London and Paris, where you can go
anywhere you want to go.

Here in southern California, we have buses and a regional train
system, but it is not as good as England and France's. One thing that
people do know is that southern California used to be many small towns
separated by farms. The towns grew and the farms disappeared, and now
it is like one huge city - a megalopolis! When we knew we needed a
good regional railroad or subway system, it was too late!

Many people drive 1 or 2 hours to go to work every day. They have to
live far from their work so they can afford to buy a house. That's a
problem now because gas is so expensive (more like Europe).

I'm lucky! I drive 5 minutes to the school where I teach.
