There was definitely a learning curve when I first started since I had never seen anything like this before. I started with basic literature research and began getting a better look into the broad topic which made it easier to really dive into the specific project that I was working on. In the beginning the work seemed a little intimidating but once I got comfortable in the lab space and knew I had people that could help me it was a lot easier to really get going and get into the really interesting parts, which is actually discovering new and exciting things!
I think the most important thing that I went into research with was being open to anything, and not being set on one way of learning or doing things. This was beneficial since it allowed me to be able to learn something completely new and be open to doing things differently than I had done before.
Throughout the course of my research experience, I know that I have changed in many ways. I learned how to work independently, how to be more analytical in my work, and how to ask the important questions that led to new discoveries. Research really has taught me to be open to the unexpected, and even welcome it, since being open has made me into a better researcher and student.
MAE SPRE provides the opportunity for students to explore engineering from the research perspective and gain insight and experience that does not result from classroom learning. Students are exposed to different types of research that are being pursued by the faculty. A general outline of the summer project is jointly developed by the student and faculty adviser. Part of the criteria for selection involves a brief written proposal for a summer project of academic merit as well as a faculty sponsor who endorses the proposal.

"Susan E. Beck and Kate Manuel have written a detailed work on practical research methods that should appeal to librarians and information professionals who struggle to fit serious research into their busy professional duties."
--Portal: Libraries and the Academy "A good tool for teaching the research method to library students as well as information professionals seeking to learn or relearn the process."--Journal of the Medical Library Association "I would recommend it without hesitation for several audiences. The text should be valuable for library students (regardless of their field), and deserves a look from busy librarians and information professionals as well."--ARBA "A guide to assist librarians to become more than what they are ... Highly recommended for any library science collection and for the librarians themselves."--Midwest Book Review "The perfect book to help librarians find both the time and the expertise needed to conduct thorough and rigorous research ... Beck and Manuel have crafted a superb resource for beginning and veteran researchers alike."--The Journal of Academic Librarianship
Practical Research with Children is designed to help the reader understand techniques for research with children, based on real world experience. The book describes a wide range of research methods, focusing equally on quantitative and qualitative approaches, and considers how different methods can be integrated. It highlights the benefits and challenges of each method and gives emphasis to best practice, with expert guidance on how to avoid potential pitfalls in order to obtain valuable insights into how children develop.
The volume includes fifteen chapters arranged over three sections. Each chapter explores a particular method, or combination of methods, and discusses both theoretical and practical issues, using a diversity of domains, including different ages, cultures, populations and settings. Uniquely, the book includes newer methods (such as eye tracking and digital technologies) alongside well-established behavioural methods which are used for research with children.
With contributions from internationally renowned researchers and practitioners from a range of disciplines, the book will be indispensable reading for a wide audience, including for students in psychology, education and nursing undertaking research projects with children, and also for anyone looking to understand the research behind current theories in child development.
Together with TUM scientists, TUM PREP students work in small research teams at different TUM chairs on a previously defined research project. Through individual support, buddies and a variety of TUM PREP events and day trips, the participants will be well integrated at TUM as well as in Munich and surroundings in a short time. The language of the TUM PREP program is English, and German language skills are not required for the participation. A German taster course is part of the program. Participants will be enrolled as exchange students and will receive a TUM student card.
