The images captured by this program are non-projected (i.e. simple rectangular X/Y grid with latitude and longitude lines at right angles) at least for distances of 85-100 miles (130-160 KM) across. The assembled maps are suitable for use directly with any APRS program that can use static (fixed non-zooming) images as maps, or as underlays for the Precision Mapping Server plugin for UIview. The images align perfectly with the non-projected vector maps produced by Precision Mapping in UIview.

Note that when used with UIview, downloaded/tiled images can be far larger (in pixels) than the resolution (in pixels) of your computer display system. UIview will "automagically" create a "viewport" window that shows a portion of the oversized map image. You can then scroll (but not zoom) around the entire map. UIview DOS NOT downsample the map image into an illegible blur in an effort to fit all of it onto the screen at once. If you reduce the color depth of map images to 256 or 16 colors, UIview can easily handle 4000x4000 pixel images or larger. iIe. the equivalent of "Ultra-HD" a.k.a. "Quad-HD" images, even if the computer display is far lower resolution -- 1024x768 XGA or 1920x1080 "full HD".

Universal Maps Downloader a.k.a. "UMD" is a $59.95 shareware program. The free "trial" download has limited functionality; it will download maps at a resolution suitable for regional coverage. For higher resolution downloads suitable for street-level applications, it requires registration. The program is available from

The program has a total installed footprint of about 5 MB. Of course, you will want considerably more space for captured map images. UMD actually consists of three separate .EXE files: the main program that does the downloading of a specified area, a "Map Viewer" that can display the collected tiles as a single large image, and a "Map Combiner" that stitches the downloaded tiles into a single large .BMP file.

When you start the main program, you are greeted by this screen. The un-calibrated "Zoom level:" slider increases/decrease the linear resolution about 2:1 for each step; i.e. quadruples or quarters the number of pixels in the resulting image. The actual size of each downloaded tile is a constant 256x256 pixels regardless of resolution requested. As you increase the resolution, the number of these tiles downloaded (for a given area defined by a pair of lat/long values) increases. Requesting a county-sized area or larger, at street-level resolution, will result in the download of hundreds or thousands of tiles.

(This is a highly-enlarged, zoomed-in view of part of the 85-mile-wide regional capture of Google Streets shown above, placed underneath Precision Mapping 8.1 vector data layer. It demonstrates how closely the vector and bitmap versions of road data can be aligned.)

Keep in mind that all maps in Locus Map consist of square tiles of 256px or 512px per side. All downloads work with whole tiles so it is not possible to download precisely round or curved maps - all are composed of square pieces of map.

Versions 2.x of Android operation system can not handle files of 2 and more gigabytes. Keep it in mind when selecting your download area and number of zooms!
If you need a bigger map, download more smaller areas, Locus Map will merge them and use them as one file.

The Advanced options menu offers accurate calculation of the final amount of map tiles which is especially useful when downloading paid commercial maps. Then there is option to set the download type:

In case you download a paid map Locus Map displays another dialog. It summarizes your LoCoin credit, final price of the downloaded map, number of tiles in the packet and the price of 100 tiles. If you have enough credit for the purchase there is no other obstruction to begin downloading.

A downloading progress info-box emerges after the download is launched. Besides useful information it offers to abort the downloading process (and lose all already downloaded data without possibility to restore the process) or pause it - then the already downloaded data is saved and the process can be renewed from the main download dialog box.

When the download is complete Locus Map automatically switches on the Maps manager offline tab where you can verify the map has been downloaded correctly. You will find it in the Locus/Maps directory.

Downloading maps is crucial to your adventure game because it lets you view maps and navigate in areas without cell service. Traditionally, downloading large areas of the map soaked up a lot of time and phone storage. But the completely retooled Gaia Topo takes the sting out of this process.

Hand curated and optimized for efficient downloads, Gaia Topo delivers minuscule download times and file sizes all while improving its style and detail. The chart below gives examples of download times and file sizes for large areas of the map. Of course, downloads speeds may vary depending on the size of the area downloaded, the zoom level selected, and internet speed.

An added bonus of downloading the map for your entire state: you can now create snap-to-trail routes in areas without cell service. When you create a route in the field, snap-to-trail automatically follows the contours of the trail for you. This gives you the most accurate distance and elevation metrics available and builds your route quickly and precisely. Enjoy this seamless route planning tool with your Android and iOS devices, from anywhere at any time. No wifi or cell service needed.

Once Gaia Topo is downloaded, you will able to access the map even when your phone is completely offline and in airplane mode so you can locate yourself on the map, create routes, create and edit waypoints to mark important spots like campsites and water sources, and record tracks and follow them back.

Gaia Topo is free to use on gaiagps.com and on your mobile device through the Gaia GPS app. The free version allows you to view the map, plan a route, and search for trails all while connected to the internet. However, you will need a Gaia GPS membership to be able to download maps for offline use.

Try a Gaia GPS Premium Membership to tap into a limited number of maps within the Gaia GPS catalog. The Premium Membership unlocks the entire Gaia GPS map catalog, allowing you to layer and download multiple maps sources at one time. View the maps together to get a complete picture of the terrain you will encounter on your next adventure.

Firstly, select a maps type in left tree, then input a task name, such like "Mytask.gmid". All task files are saved as *.gmid. If you want to continue an old task, click button "Open task...".

There are 4 parameters (Left Longitude, Right Longitude, Top Latitude, Bottom Latitude) to define the area scope of images that you want to download.

The zoom level defines the image precision.

Select a path to save the project, then click button "Start", OK, start downloading now ... !

When downloading, the log window will show the downloading process. When finished, the log will be saved to a file.

For longitude and latitude, the input measurement is degree. You can convert the measurement of "Degrees, Minutes,Seconds" to "Degrees" by click menu
"Misc->Convert 'Degrees,Minutes,Seconds' to 'Degrees'...".

How to get the lat/long information from Google Maps?
You can right-click a location on the map and select "What's here?" The coordinates of that location will automatically appear in the Search box at the top of the page.

1. Google map uses a protection mechanism to keep a good quality of service. If one makes too much requests, google map will add its IP address to a blacklist, and you may see a message:

Google Error : 403 forbidden

To avoid IP banned, you can try to set the downloader to pause some minutes.
Click menu "Misc"->"Options", the following window will be displayed: check the checkbox "Set pause to avoid IP banned.

2. For some areas, there are no high precision images on google's server, so may be caused a error "404 not found" when you try to download such images. If this happened, you need to set smaller zoom size to download. (For most areas, the max zoom level is 18)

Offline Map Maker: Difference from Universal Maps Downloader: Offline Map Maker can download multi zoom level in one task, but Universal Maps Downloader can only download single zoom level in one task.

For RMaps: When you finished exporting tiles to sqlite database with export type 'For RMaps or Locus Map', you will get a file: your_task_name.gmid.sqlitedb, then copy it to your Android device, to your RMaps installed path, might be like '/sdcard/rmaps/maps/', then refresh your RMaps offline maps, you will see a new offline maps "your_task_name_gmid.sqlitedb".
Note: when you view the offline maps in RMaps, you need to zoom it to your downloaded zoom level, otherwise, it will show blank maps.

For Locus Map: Same as RMaps, when you finished exporting tiles to sqlite database with export type 'For RMaps or Locus Map', you will get a file: your_task_name.gmid.sqlitedb, then copy it to your Android device, to your Locus Maps installed path, might be like '/sdcard/Locus/maps/', then refresh your Locus offline maps, you will see a new offline maps "your_task_name.gmid.sqlitedb".

For OruxMaps: When you finished exporting tiles to sqlite database with export type 'For Oruxmaps', you will get two files: your_task_name.gmid.otrk2, your_task_name.gmid.OruxMapsImages.db, you need to rename the your_task_name.gmid.OruxMapsImages.db to OruxMapsImages.db, then on your Android device, in your OruxMaps installed path, might be like '/sdcard/oruxmaps/mapfiles/', create a new folder suchlike 'exmaple', then copy "OruxMapsImages.db" and "your_task_name.gmid.otrk2.xml" to this folder, refresh your oruxmaps offline maps, you will see a new offline maps "your_task_name_gmidmap".
