Hi,

Apologies for cross-posting this, but we may have an opportunity to take advantage of the Google Summer of Code program. This means that we could get a student, sponsored by Google, to contribute a piece of functionality to OpenMRS.

Do any of the subscribers to these lists have any ideas for OpenMRS functionality that might be useful for eSaude EMR? I would be happy to act as the mentor for such a project. One problem I've already seen discussed is data reconstruction (bulk data entry). Would there be any use for a module that can import data into OpenMRS from an Excel spreadsheet, Access database or any other system currently used for storing patient data in Mozambique?

I look forward to hearing your ideas.

Cheers,
Pascal

The technical mailing list address was slightly misspelled (had an “h” in it) – corrected here.

Great Pascal!  Claudio brought this up at the workshop, but having been a mentor myself for a few years I was concerned about the amount of time it takes to mentor someone while doing my other workload.  If you would be willing to mentor, I’m sure we could come up with a good project for eSaude.  I do want to make sure that it is not a project that is in the critical path for these initial implementations, but could be utilized to improve the system overall.

I do like the idea of improving the spreadsheet import module to help with data reconstruction – that’s an interesting idea for the broader implementations that will be coming, especially if it expands beyond HIV care in the coming years.

I’d also be specifically interested in hearing what Eurico thinks he could use some help on with the system.  Are there infrastructure improvements we could make to ease installation, ease system administration, or improve the distribution / upgrading of the system?

Another thought, what about working on the electronic transmission of indicators to DHIS2 – isn’t that in Mozambique now?  That would help with the overall national eHealth architecture, which we definitely do not want to forget about.

What do the other members think about these ideas?

Sounds really interesting James.  Can you share a little more now about what it involved, the current setup, and the results?  Or should we just wait for the documents?

Another idea for the GSOC student would be building system performance and usage monitoring tools.  Bill and I and another developer built a tool called PUMP (performance and usage monitoring program) for the KenyaEMR.  It might be really great to have a GSOC student generalize this into a module that interacts with eSaude.  Bill – thoughts on this?

Hi Jan,

I just came from a field test in Kenya on the electronic transmission of indicators to DHIS2 from OpenMRS.

I’m currently working on updating the documents based on the field test and will share them in the next few weeks.

Thanks

James

Hi all,

I'm very happy to mentor. Initial project ideas need to be here by tomorrow, so I'll go ahead and add the two ideas we've spoken about so far. These projects don't need to be final, but Google starts looking at the project pages form tomorrow.

Anyone is welcome to add project ideas to the OpenMRS wiki or let me know here and I'll add them.

Ciao,
Pascal

Sounds good. Which two are you adding?

Hi,

I added projects to improve bulk data import and also to improve interoperability with the DHIS. The full list of proposed GSoC projects can be found here.

Hi all,

Our collaborator, James Kariuki, who is a fellow at the CDC in Atlanta, has just completed a field test of migrating data from OpenMRS to DHIS in Kenya. I think we should engage him to see how this has gone.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments. I've added a page for the performance and utilization module here: https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/projects/System+Performance+and+Utilization+Module. Are there any additional resource I can attach to the page or link to?

@Starley, James responded earlier in the thread. When he shares his report on the field test I'll attach it to the OpenMRS project page (if he give me permission to do so). @James, if you already know of some development we can do to improve the OpenMRS-DHIS2 integration then let me know and I'll add to the project objectives.

Ciao,
Pascal

Pascal – feel free to add something like:

Develop an OpenMRS module to supply information on system performance and utilization, in order to monitor reliability and impact of the electronic medical record system installation.  This module would monitor OpenMRS and transfer specific system indicators using the Performance and Utilization Monitoring Program framework developed for an OpenMRS network implementation in Kenya.
