Hi all,

Please see the email below and have a look at the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program. Last year there were zero student or mentor applications from Mozambique and it would be great if we could do a bit better this year!

For those of us with experience with OpenMRS, please consider signing up to be a mentor.

Does anyone have any connection with the computer science department at UEM or other institution? I think it would be great if we could try to inform the students of GSoC and hopefully get some of them to apply. This will be good for the global OpenMRS community but also for our local eSaude community, since it could help us create new community members.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks!

Pascal

Hi everyone,

Believe it or not, GSoC 2015 is around the corner once again!
OpenMRS has had a wonderful time working with some great GSoC students over the past few years, and we're excited to see what GSOC 2015 will bring us
To make GSOC 2015 a reality, we need your help!

Would you like to mentor a university student this summer during GSoC? If you're an experienced OpenMRS developer and are interested, we want to hear from you. Specifically, we're looking for mentors who:

    1. Are willing to help teach students how to participate in open source projects,
    2. Have an interesting (but achievable) project on which a student can work during the summer, and
    3. Are committed to dedicating a few hours each week to mentor a student.

If this sounds like something you want to do, please let us know! Write to comm...@openmrs.org no later than the 9th February, and let us know your plans:

    1. Why you want to be a GSoC mentor.
    2. If you've been a mentor before, tell us what you found most rewarding about mentoring, and if this would be your first time, what you think you might get out of the experience.
    3. A short (1-2 sentence) description about one or more projects you might want a student to work on. (These ideas don't have to be finalized yet!)

If selected, we'll get back to you in the next 1-2 weeks and have you post your project ideas on our GSoC 2015 ideas page.

Thanks and best regards,

See the message below from Suranga.

For those of you with OpenMRS development experience, I strongly urge you to volunteer to become a mentor for GSoC (see this thread). For those of you with any kind of connection to an academic institution, please consider leading a GSoC student orientation program at that institution - myself and the OpenMRS community will gladly help with this in any way that we can (mail comm...@openmrs.org for help).

Thanks!

Pascal

+10000

We would love to see students and mentors from Mozambique, and we're willing to help you as much as we can. We'd be happy to help anyone who wants to lead a GSoC student orientation program at any university, or come up with a neat project idea for a student to work on.

The people I met in Mozambique are more than capable of being students and mentors. We'd love you to come up with a good project idea and get on board with us :-)

Hi all,

We only have one day left to develop our initial project ideas and volunteer to be mentors for GSoC. Please help increase the involvement by the Mozambican OpenMRS community by contributing a project idea and/or volunteering to be a mentor.

Remember: You do not have to be a developer to contribute an idea or be a mentor. Much of the mentoring process is helping the student become part of the community and guiding them in the process of asking questions in the correct way and showing them where and how to find answers. Also, you will have a co-mentor (such as myself, Jan or another experienced mentor) to help you.

If you would like to contribute an idea, please add it to this google doc. Remember that the developers are students, with only a short time (3 months) to work on the project, so try to keep the scope of the project small, or at least break it down into small achievable objectives.

If you would like to be a mentor (or backup mentor to get experience), please send a message to comm...@openmrs.org letting Suranga know of your interest.

If you have any questions please ask them here and I will do my best to respond to them all.

I look forward to having some Mozambican representation in GSoC this year!

Tchau,
Pascal
